New 522ce
« on: February 27, 2015, 03:13:30 AM »
Just picked up a 522ce from my local music store. I had no intention on buying but hanging high on one wall there she was. She seemed to call my name.  I played her for a while and new I just had to have her.  Next step was to see if I could negotiate a good price. I made an offer that I knew they wouldn't accept and to surprise they did!  I won't discuss price but it was more than 10% their asking price.  Here are some pictures.

First off, cute dog!!!

Secondly, I really like how you have three completely different guitars now...rosewood dread, this all hog GC, and if I'm reading it right, a Koa GA.  That's an awesome combo.  Enjoy all three, and especially your new hog.  I bet for a GC you'll be able to do the expected finger style, but also dig in with some strumming/flat picking because of the hog top.  Enjoy!

Thanks for the comment on the dog. Didn't mean for her to be in the picture. Her name is Lizzie and she's a Yorkie with droopy ears.

Seriously, your new guitar is beautiful. I just love the mahogany Taylors and I'm also a big cedar fan. You're gonna love the GC....so comfortable. I know how dogs seem to wander into our guitar shots. My 2 do that, but they don't turn out as nice as yours did. I usually have to do a retake.

The reason I got the GC is the scale length. I'm getting up there in years and thought the shorter scale length wood be nice and so far so good. This will probably be my go to guitar. Unfortunately the pictures (even on Taylor's website) don't do it justice.  They don't capture the deep rich color and grain of the guitar. That's what first caught my eye.

You can always get to a shorter scale by tuning down one or two steps, then using the capo to get back to standard pitch.  You can even maintain the same tension.  Medium gauge strings tuned D-D are almost the same exact overall tension as light gauge strings tuned E-E.  Then capo at the second fret, and you are back in synch with the world again.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

Yes, I know I could do that and my wife would prefer if I had done that (she thinks I have too many guitars). As I said earlier, I really wasn't in the market that day, but when I saw her in the store I knew I had to have her. There's a song by Guy Clark and Vernon Thompson call the "The Guitar" that describes it all the only difference being the guy in the song didn't have to pay for his. LOL.....

They play like a dream and sound amazing, I just ordered some of the martin retros to put on. love the elixers but since its new usual time for trying different strings
