When wet they swell to about 3/8" (10 mm) diameter, but dry they are the size of BB's (about 2 mm). Still no idea why my JPG won't post -- it has in the past -- but that issue has happened here before.
I find that the water beads hold much more water than simple sponges. Sponges may need to be re-wet every week during dry conditions, but water beads are usually good for a month or more -- for me. Back on topic, it sounds like the OP may be fighting excess humidity rather than dry conditions, hence the mention of silica gel packs and a hygrometer. His focus should probably be more on mitigating hot temperatures during the day when he is away from the camper van. Ideally his guitar should be in a styrofoam cooler during hot weather in an enclosed vehicle.
