A little disappointed in Taylor on this one.....
« on: November 02, 2019, 07:47:36 PM »
I recently got an email about striped ebony cutting boards.

I thought to myself, "wow.....Bob has done it again.....find use for these trees that are cut down in hopes of finding that beautiful, pure black ebony, only to fined striped"......19 out of 20, is it?

And they are flippin' beautiful.

But $150 for a cutting board?  Seriously?  Plus another $35 to ship it?

Pass.

Am I missing something?

I'd rather spend $150 on a nice cutting board than $75 on a guitar pick...

Well, I'm not sure what you are referring to, but both are ridiculous.  And since no one (that I am aware of) is forcing you to make that choice, would you pay $150 for a cutting board?

I've seen people on this forum and others talking about Blue Chip picks. The prices of those are just stupid.

But, yeah, I might drop $150 on a cutting board. I'd have to see it first, though...

For a cutting board, I can spend a lot less to have one I find functional, in terms of size, material, etc (and I have). So, "NO", I'd never spend $150 on any cutting board.

For me (and just me), I don't see these as cutting boards. I see them as a fine piece of beautiful wood. Being that it is made from ebony, nicely crafted and presented, I can understand the price more.  And that's how I'd treat it, as a display item to be admired. That said, I have other things that I'd rather spend that $150 on.

I'd be interested to know where the name came from.

"Stella Falone"?

Thanks for all the replies.......I guess my point is this.  If you are trying to find a market for a wood product that came from a tree that you would not have cut down if you knew that it wasn't what you were really after......and given that, according to what I have read on the subject, that is 19 out of 20 of them.......I wouldn't be trying to make it a piece of art.  I'd be trying to make it something that could sell enough to justify the cutting down of the tree.

Well, they're out of the larger cutting boards at the moment...

I mentioned this to a friend of mine; a very successful chef and restaurant owner here in town. His reply about the price:

"That's in line with Boos, which is another manufacturer. There is a small market for that.  There are very good boards in that price range and people do buy them."

Some of the larger Boos boards start climbing towards the $400 range, so I'd have to say that, while much cheaper cutting boards can certainly be found, $150 isn't bad for what would be considered a "finely crafted" piece...

Interesting, but not surprising to see this being said.  I would not know a good cutting board from a mediocre one. But I think this is true for almost anything.  If you are into something you trend to the finer, higher quality end of the product.
Kind of like guitars.  Most people would think spending 500.00 on a musical instrument in a lot of money let alone 5,000 - 10,000.  Do you think some would think us crazy at spending that kind of coin on a guitar.
He who loses money, loses much; he who loses a friend, loses more; he who loses faith, loses all.

And I didn't mention this....the reason I wouldn't spend the money on a cutting board like that is, I'm no professional chef! I get by, but rather than being the kitchen, I spend my time outside in the yard, building stuff/buildings with my husband, or working in the woods. My husband got me a sign that reads:
"The only reason I have a kitchen, is because it came with the house."  ::)

my wife spent over 2 weeks making 2 of these 3D cutting boards and wouldn’t sell them for even $200. There’s a lot of work involved in crafted items not to mention the cost of materials.
Her son plays the piano quite well and one will be a gift.
