I am content with where I am with my Taylor guitars. But, with the other instruments I play, I'm always open to new, fun things. We travel a lot in the motorhome and attend a couple music festivals in Michigan. Soooo......I was playing around with instruments at Elderly Instruments in Lansing (my go-to store for 44 years, a bad place to visit, if you don't want more instruments). Well, I just had to come home with another couple instruments that were just too fun to pass up.

1. I tried the Martin LXK2 travel guitar (like I need another guitar  :-\). Fingerpicking on this little guy is fun! It's voice is not toy sounding and it has nice volume. I was picking a fast bluegrass tune on it, my husband was in the other room, and he wondered what guitar I was playing. He was surprised that it was this Little Martin. He encouraged me to get it for travel and messing around with at home. I had a Baby Taylor for awhile, and this just sounds better (my GS mini will always be my favorite). Being it's HPL, I don't have to worry about it. I have it hanging on a String Swing in my music room for quick, grab and play. It sure didn't cost much for some music fun.

2.  I'm not a real die-hard ukulele fan, but I do attend uke jams at festivals, because they are just cool to do. Get a bunch of people together playing ukes, and you're all smiling.  :D I saw this tenor Kala ziricote laminate uke hanging on the wall. "Wow" I said, and it was reasonably priced. Again, going to festivals, laminates are good for travel. So, I tried it out (and others) and thought it sounded really nice, to match it's beauty. So, it followed me home too.

Life is too short to take it too seriously. Sometimes you have to forget about all the "big guns" (super expensive instruments) and have some fun with the little guys. Here are my two new little guys.

Love the Uke.  I showed the picture to my granddaughter(she is learning to play a uke) and she really flipped over it.

By the way, not only is the zircote uke sharp-looking, but so is the woody colors and the moose motif on the throw pillows.

 Congrats on your "little guys" additions. I bought a used LXK2 a few years ago. My very first Martin. :) It's a fun little guitar to play around with. Enjoy.

Congrats, Susie!  Love the ziricote ukulele.  Kala makes good instruments at all price points.  My wife has a Little Martin in pink, but for me I would have chosen the koa too, just as you did.  The LM sounds better than the Baby Taylor to our ears (we used to own one but moved it along years ago).  I sometimes sit and play it for her while she works on a sewing project, since it lives in her room.

I agree that Elderly is a dangerous place [for your wallet] but incredibly fun and homey.  It's probably a good thing that we live far away now and no longer visit Michigan very often.  A road trip to Lansing is a mandatory part of every visit to MI.  As for playing the inexpensive instruments, I really enjoy my $500 Teton parlor acquired almost three years ago, and the old Seagull S6 that I've had for about 25 years.

Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
