Returned 414CE - Came home with 315CE
« on: January 24, 2012, 06:18:43 PM »
Just returned a 414CE that was overly trebly.  Had no depth or character and I didn't have the patience or time to wait for the thing to open up  :(.  I think a guitar hould sound great off the shelf and continue to age gracefully.  In all fairness, my friend's 2000 414 sounds amazing!

I did heaps of research and picked up a 315CE Jumbo - sweeeet mercy this is my ride.  She has a big, beautiful voice with the zingy, crispy, and harmonically rich Taylor highs and beautiful harmonic overtones as the sustain decays.

Fingerpicking gives me great woody tones with lovely harmonics and she loves aggressive strumming.  There's no overcompression and mush like the 414CE I had exhibited - the strumming has a great deep resonace with that Talor sparkle sitting on top- seems to breathe as you strum..

The added benefit is the Expression System, which on this guitar sounds stunning.  On the 414CE I briefly had, it was nasally and very dull; either it was ampliying what was truly there, as I wasn't happy with the acoustic tone, or there was a defect in the electronics.

This guitar punches well above it's weight!

Congrats on the new guitar.  Taylor has left the jumbo out of the line up this year, but I think the revoicing they'll do for nextyear will be well worth it.  Have fun playing that thing, and remember, we need pics ;D

Congrats on finding a guitar that spoke to you! ;) I've heard some of the 3xx and 4xx guitars that didn't move me while others have been overwhelmingly beautiful in their tone. Even Bob once said that when a guitar opens up, it isn't going to be a huge difference. If your 414ce didn't have a tonal quality that you loved to start with, most likely it would never meet your expectations even after it opens up. Tone is subjective, and it doesn't mean the 414ce wasn't good...it just wasn't the one for you. :) Glad you found something you love!
