How best to describe Taylor's "typical" sound?
« on: January 18, 2012, 08:40:36 PM »
We've all seen plenty of posts by folks who try to describe the Taylor family sound, whether they say Taylors are heavy on the trebles or jangly or bell-like. To be sure, I've played a few Taylors (a GA-3 comes to mind) that were unbalanced to my ear, but calling Taylors as a group "jangly" isn't accurate. I wonder what descriptions we could agree upon to describe the sound of Taylor guitars as a whole? The word I like to use for mine, and many others I've played, is "chime," which I think gives a good sense of the ringing overtones of my guitar.

What do all of you think is the best word or description to use for the family sound?

I'd say "balanced brilliance with excellent articulation across the strings".

Clear tone, sometimes bright, seldom (if ever) muddy.  Here is true story. After playing a few other brands mostly less expensive I went to the local brick-and-mortar music store and Taylor dealership. I played almost every type while sitting on a comfy chair in the glassed-in and locked acoustic room.  After about the third guitar when the salesman came back in I asked him if he had some trick technology installed in the room that made all the guitars sound great.  He laughed and suggested that having the walls covered with great acoustic guitars may help.

To use an ice cream analogy, I'd say that:

Martins are good, old fashioned vanilla.
Gibsons are double fudge brownie.
Taylors are something a little sweeter like pralines and cream.
