322 14 fret paddle head non electric, no cutaway
« on: February 25, 2023, 02:15:05 PM »
I have on order this discontinued model with the Tasmanian Blackwood b/s.

I would like opinions on the pros and cons of this model, and how you think it
Stacks up with the newer all mahogany version.

If you have suggestions for string choice I’m all ears!

Thank you in advance for any input!

Wow, and I am just having my first cup of the morning here. I have the model you ordered and it has quickly become among my favorites and usually the first guitar I grab. To put it in perspective, I travel for a living and bring a guitar with me(hence the CF guitars I own) but when I think it will be safe I wanted to bring a GC sized Taylor, so I acquired the 322e for this purpose.
I wouldn’t say it is better than my Custom coco/euro spruce GC but is a great compliment to it. It isn’t better than the K24ce BE but I have really come to like the GC size for comfort and responsiveness in my fingerstyle play so I grab it first(i also had surgery on my arm a few months ago so that plays into it a little).
Now to your point, the 522ce vs 322e. I have the 12 fret of the all mahogany 522 and it has become one of my least played guitars, but not because there is anything wrong with it. I actually just played it yesterday and it has a slightly “richer” tone maybe? So hard to describe the differences in tone, but there is one. The 12fret has noticeably more bass response but to my ear the 322 has a more balanced response.
As to strings, I do like the Elixir PB on it but have tried SCGC low tension and am currently using the D’Addario XS PB strings which sound great to my ear on it. I like the SCGC strings on the 522 but not as much on the 322, YMMV.
Looking forward to hearing your experience on a guitar that seems to punch well above its weight in my herd. The 322 gets more than 1/2 the play time here and you can see all the other guitars in the signature(my wife says I may have a problem….)

Thanks for the informative reply!

The GC body size is perfect for me as larger bodies cause comfort issues.

Good to hear about the XS strings as I’ve become quite enamored of them on my Gibson L-00 Standard. They definitely last me a long time.

I’ll give my assessment of the 322 after acclimating to it, and it to it’s new surroundings!

There must be at least one person who has bought a 322.

Let me know your thoughts!

Hi Airborne. How are you  liking the 322? I just put an offer in on a 2015 non electric no cutaway. (I hope it's not yours).

I don't own a 322 but I liked every one of them I've tried.  And the TasBlackwood is a nice-sounding build to my ears!  If I saw one in a 12fret with cutaway I'd be seriously tempted ;0

I guess I do have the e on mine, but I don’t think of it that way. It doesn’t really get plugged in, I use the Taylorsense app to keep track of the temp/humidity and any impacts while I travel. I hope you both enjoy the ones you are getting or trying to and report back here about them.

Well my offer got accepted. It's a 2015 with supposedly no fret wear or dings. Should get it Friday. I'll post back.

Well, I’m really enjoying my 322!

I’ve changed the elixirs it came with to Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze and like them much better!

I can’t find any fault with this guitar. It came very well set up and playable out of the box. Fit and finish is impeccable, like every other Taylor I have handled. It has an elegant look to it! The tone is very pleasing to my ear. I love it!

I hope you’re enjoying yours!

I think the 322 is an excellent guitar. Really good sound, nice finishing, loads of fun to play.
Enjoy it in good heath, and happiness.  Cheers

I have been favorably impressed by the 322's that I have played - maybe four of them.  The Tasmanian blackwood ones are especially nice.  I am a big koa fan and Taz is a close acacia cousin.  The one GC that really had me thinking hard was a 522 that my LGS had about three years ago.  It was perhaps the best single Taylor that I have ever played, bar none.  I almost bought it.... but resisted temptation.  It did not stay on their wall very long.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

I'm really enjoying the 2015 I just got a week ago. It came with some fairly worn PB strings and it still sounded good. I put some Ernie Ball 80/20 on it and it sounds great. I have other strings to try but I'm sure 80/20's will stay in the rotation.
