Change in neck profile;what year?
« on: January 16, 2012, 10:13:39 AM »
I remember reading over on AGF that at some point in the past that Taylor changed to a slightly beefier standard neck profile. What year was the new neck profile standard on all models or was it a gradual change? Thanks,Mike S.

hi mike,

Taylor purchased their first Fadal CNC in late 89 & all guitars up until that point
were 'hand-made', with a good bit of variance in neck carves & other areas

the NT neck was phased in beginning in 99 & thru 00 & with the CNC process
continuing to be refined & more exacting, there are many that feel the preNT
neck Taylors have a slimmer, 'faster' feel, regarding the neck carve/profile

Taylor currently offers several different neck profiles & i believe that
the slim carve is meant to be quite close in feel to the older necks
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

I remember reading somewhere (or maybe I heard Doyle Dykes say it) that the Slim Carve neck was kind of his doing.  Reportedly,  Doyle noted that his older Taylors had slimmer necks, and he preferred them.  So Taylor measured some his older necks and the new "slim carve" CNC neck was born.  I do not know the year it was made available.

The T5 neck was born with the T5 guitars and is slightly larger, but not as large as the standard neck.

I don't know when the modified V-neck became available.  I'm thinking at the start-up of R. Taylor.

When I was specing out my BTO I had numerous discussions with the tech guys at Taylor about how to go about duplicating the, to my hand, slimmer (or faster as Micheal noted) pre-NT neck. They suggested I have them do a T-5 neck carve on a 1 3/4 nut width neck to get the closest approximation of the pre NT neck profile. Worked out just grand.
