need help with tonewoods
« on: January 11, 2012, 10:05:46 AM »
Hi all, new poster here  :)

I am starting to decide on a new BTO, even as I'm selling my walnut BTO. I have to admit, I'm a sucker for a pretty face, so I'm
looking at either a cocobolo/sinker or macassar/sinker combo. This would be my primary guitar, so my question is, are these wood pairings as limited as some seem to say they are?

I'm a country/folk writer, and do plenty of single-note picking as well as james taylor type of finger stuff. So I need a guitar that can be fairly versatile. I realize I'm looking at a beefier, bass-ier kind of tone, which is fine. I just need to know that bluegrass style runs and country strumming won't be completely lost in the mix :)

Would love to hear from folks who've played or owned these types of combos. Many thanks  :D

My coco/sinker GC is the most versatile guitar I've ever played.  I play everything from delicate fingerstyle songs to raucous strummers, and every note is clear, distinct, and gorgeous.  I couldn't be happier with the wood combo.  It ain't bad-looking either.

I have never played either combo but they sure look nice. Found the pictures below from a dealer that builds a lot of BTO's. I'm fairly positive all of these are out of my price range.

Those are some great examples you found there..
I'm especially partial to the Coco one on the bottom (since I bought it)..

But you can't go wrong with either combo you are interested in.. I wouldn't describe them as "limited" either..  But perhaps not a traditional sound for most people doing country, for sure..

G day mea with cocobolo you'll get lots of overtones with an exception bass responce and very evenly balanced guitar, and my preferance over most other tone woods especially in the GS shape.
