***NEW CHANGES - Please Read!***
« on: November 26, 2016, 08:38:20 PM »
Hello Everyone!

This year, we'll be hitting our 5th year since we launched the UTGF! We have 4900+ members, over 83,000 posts and 6100+ topics!  At our current rate, we'll be averaging about 1,200,000 page views a year!

This year the mods and I took an assessment of our forum and thought of some ways to enhance the forum.  Here are two way that I believe will make the forum a little bit easier and more enjoyable:

1. The "no pricing" rule has been changed.  The "no pricing" rule had been in effect since we started. From now on, prices can be discussed on everything...BUT guitars both new and usedGuitar pricing is still not allowed, but everything else is now game.  This part will make sense with the 2nd change.

2. We will be adding a new sub-forum for official Taylor guitar dealers, and other guitar related companies etc.  We believe that the best way for you to make your next purchase is to be able to have a direct link to the different official dealers. In this space, they'll be able to post their website info, pics of new guitars, contact information about their store etc. This will provide an avenue for the dealers to be able to reach this community directly with new and different offerings from Taylor.  If you have a favorite Taylor dealer that you don't see here, please PM me and I'll be glad to add them.

The plan is to give each Taylor dealer and other guitar product oriented companies their own "sticky" thread.  There you will be able to interact with them etc.  Remember the no pricing rule for guitars is STILL in effect and so both the dealers and you will have to communicate via PM etc.

I know these are somewhat smaller changes, but I believe that it'll make it better in the long run for both our members and visitors etc. Thanks so much for being part of this community.  Here's to the next 5 years!

PS: I'm still looking into a mobile platform as well  ;)  ;D

Congratulation on your 5th year.  Wow does time fly.
I am very excited to have a new dealer sub-forum.  This will offer us a direct link to our favorite dealers, so that we can communicate directly with them.

Congratulations on 5 years.

While I'm fairly new to the Forum (and to guitar playing itself) the new changes seems to be pretty well thought out!  Maybe something to think about in the future is a new "section" set up by area of the country so that anyone living in the Northeast, or the MidAtlantic, Southeast, Southwest, Midwest, West Coast etc can communicate or contact those in their geographic area.  Just a thought.

Thanks for the changes! Many members will appreciate discussing prices of all other items except for all guitar brands. :) And a sub-forum for dealers will be an asset to our community. 8)

Hi All,

I'm sorry if there was some confusion as I should have made the post a little more clear, I think in the interest of the dealers who sell other brands of guitars too that guitar pricing whether or not Taylor brand will still be prohibited.

That's my fault for not being clearer!

Oops...sorry for my misunderstanding. :-[ I just edited my comment to reflect that.

Not your fault!  It was mine! (I meant to QUOTE your post, not edit......I am failing today at most things)  - Josh  ::)

It'll be for both new and used for all guitars. Sorry for the lack of clarification on my part!

I guess I just don't get it..........all the dealers and all the sponsors that are on the other sites (Martin, Guild, Gibson) are not bothered by pricing discussions in thousands of posts over the years, so why would they be offended or bothered by pricing here at UTGF? to me, this is a site for musicians to exchange knowledge and to help each other in whatever way we can.....UTGF should be structured for our convenience, not the sponsors or dealers' preferences! I really don't understand the "secrecy" of dollars and cents information....compete, and you stay in business.....if you can't compete, you're gone.....that's entrepreneurship, it's the American way! I thought UTGF existed to educate musicians, not to ensure maximum profits for those who sell their products!

Discussion including pricing can only benefit the members -- and the dealers.  What's wrong with giving our favorite local dealers a heads up on how to make their pricing competitive and drive more buyers to their doors?

Out of pure curiosity, what is the reason for not allowing pricing to be discussed here?

there are dealers that have been 'forced' to discount guitars deep,
due to some customer sense of entitlement & anyone who knows
someone that owns a shop that there is hardly any $ in selling
a guitar, even at the 500 series range, after the bills are paid,
at that 'standard discount' which some customers feel is 'fair',
so in order to try to meet that expectation & to make the sale,
some are 'forced' to beat everyone else's $, which is unfortunate

it's not about being competitive & it's not about maximizing profit -
it's about being able to keep the doors open in order to provide
ongoing service to customers & to continue being an operating dealer

i've seen music stores that have been in business for 30 and 40 years
that ended up calling it, because when it came time, after all was said
and done, it got to where there just wasn't enough to keep on doing it -
if someone walks into a store, has an employee help them, answers their
questions, pulls out various instruments to be tried out & takes the time
to try to provide what will meet the customer's needs the best, what value
is placed on what it takes in order for the store to be able to do that?

in all fairness, what should the store be allowed to make for their service?

is it fair for someone to spend hours of their time, only to
see the sale go to another shop because the e-mail quote
they were asked to match was basically a 'near-nothing' deal?

manufacturers feel that if a store is willing to put the time, effort,
resources & finances into carrying their product line, they would
like to see the store be successful, but for some reason or another
this is not always the case & so not all stores carry all products &
that leaves the store to determine what will make it possible to
sustain their business as it changes, which takes more each year -
being able to communicate with the customer directly allows the
shop the opportunity to help them in the best way that they're able,
rather than to see who bought what where for how much on a webpage

josh hasn't asked for anything in return for keeping this place running,
nor has he received anything that he hasn't passed on, so in my mind
there really shouldn't be any question why it is, it's just because it is -
there are plenty of  places to go for information & in doing some
research, there might be some enlightenment found along the way

it's all about why you play ...

I've asked the question before and still stand by my thoughts that pricing SHOULD be able to be discussed. I enjoy this board very much and of course will follow the rules, but I will say that the policy of keeping pricing secret I always thought, kept this board from being the definitive source when researching Taylor.

But.....much like the guy they voted in for president? I don't like it but i can't do a thing about it.

Other than this issue? This forum has always been great and I love the knowledge base and friendly people here.
