2004 710CE-L9 Short Scale
« on: January 07, 2012, 02:38:22 PM »
I love the way this guitar works w/ the short scale, but the neck angle is bad,the action is high, hardly any saddle, and the fingerboard has a dip from f14 to f19.I'm doing a neck reset,a partial fret level, new saddle and nut,and set-up. When I pulled the neck, there was a small crack between the inserts, which I filled w/gap filling superglue and clamped. Both my older short scale guitars have this same problem.Hopefully when I'm done,it'll act like I want it to.Then I'll tackle the 410 short scale.I thought ya'll might like to see some pics of it in pieces(he-he).

I'm a CNC machinist,I'll do them on a milling machine after I decide exactly what size they need to be.I'm going to use layers of aluminum duct tape (.003 thick) to find the right fit.

Got her back together.Great neck angle ,intonation,sound. Action still a little high(3/32 @ 12).
Looks like the new shim will be about .020 thinner @ the bottom.I'm gonna play it a few days, pull the original shim,
touch off on the top,@ mill it to -.020 at the bottom. Should be perfect. Then I'll build a new saddle, etc.

Steve,
From what I have read and seen, the Taylor shims are marked with a "value", i.e. a number. I don't know if it is an actual thickness measurement, because they are also tapered along the length. Taylor wants the two shim values to always have the same value difference between them, which, if I recall correctly, is 6. Thus, if the guitar comes with a set that is a Number 4 and a Number 10, replacements should be a Number 5 and Number 11, or Number 3 and Number 9, or something to that effect.

The point is they are a set.  So if you remove .020 inch from one you will likely need to increase the thickness of the other.

Not sure about that. The #s on these were 2&4=6.I used .003 aluminum tape to change the angle proper. This is the first NT that I've done.I'm gonna call them today & see can I get new shims.I'd almost bet I can't.The guitar actually plays better, and has a better bass than it did before. The intonation will be dead on when I lower the action a little on the bass side.(~1/64")Thanks for your input. The only negative,is a slight gap @ the end of the fingerboard, which I expected.I can live w/that as Taylor charges $X00 +shipping both ways. They do a great job.I just had a "99 414 done & it came back dang nigh perfect.
