Just Bought First Taylor

Hello all

Just bought my first Taylor guitar and thus wanted to join your forum.  I have been playing an 70's vintage Takamine F-340 (the famed "lawsuit guitar"), but just scored a nice 1999 Taylor 414.  Love the sound of my new ride and look forward to learning more about Taylor guitars from you guys.

Welcome Buck. My 2002 414 was my first full sized Taylor. It will never leave me.....it's just that versatile. You'll really appreciate having that around. Enjoy. Yes, and a few pics of it would be cool to see.

Welcome Buck.  This is quite a coincidence as I just acquired a 1999 414 standard a week ago!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Here are a few pics of my 414.  I am trying to figure out what wood Taylor made this guitar from.  The front almost looks like it could be cedar, but I am not sure.  The back I assume is ovangkol, but I am not even sure about that.  I might need to call Taylor to see if they can confirm.

I'm pretty sure that you will find that it's a Sitka top and an Ovangkol B/S assuming that it just says 414 on the label.

I'd say from your pics that the top has just darkened over time. Looks very nice!

Buck, my 414ce made in 2001 has darkened much like that one and it is Sitka spruce.  The back and sides are likely ovangkol, unless yours is a limited edition (LTD as part of the model number).  Early 400 series were rosewood, before they switched to using ovangkol.  Welcome!

Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.

Very nice! My sitka top has darkened too. They sure mature nicely.
