522-12 Capo
« on: February 26, 2016, 03:53:12 PM »
Hi all,
I really love my Taylor 522-12 fret but I'm having one issue.  All the capos I have seem to be just a little too short to adequately cover all 6 strings on this 1 3/4" nut, slot head guitar.

I'm using a Dunlop 84 series and a Kaiser clothes pin type but both need to be applied very accurately to prevent buzz or a mute.  Would Dunlop's classical (88 series) capo fit better and can it be used on steel strings?

Any capo recommendations you have would be greatly appreciated.

All my guitars have 1.75" nut widths, and I've never had a problem with any type of capo I've used, including G7 Performance and Keyser types.

I mostly use Dunlop Trigger spring-loaded capos, or the original Shubb.  I don't have this problem, and most of my guitars are 1-3/4" necks - or even wider in the case of my Seagull S6.  I've also tried most every common capo out there, but Trigger and Shubb are my go-to options.

A classical capo will likely not work all that well, being designed for a flat finger board.  Maybe try a capo specifically intended for a twelve string guitar.  Twelvers are 1-7/8" necks typically, and that would give ou plenty of width to work with.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.

I use Shubbs on all my guitars, including those with 1 3\4" nuts. No problems. However, when I look at my Shubbs, sometimes the black sleeves vary slightly in length. Maybe you got one that is slightly shorter. When I sold my 12-string a few years ago, I used the 12-string Shubb on a 6-string. No question it will work great.

If a short sleeve is the case, Elderly (and Shubb) sell replacement rubber sleeves.  I bought a few years ago with the intent of trimming and experimenting with partial capos.
