I most likely would have purchased a Martin D28.    I had played a few older ones of friends and a few new ones in the store.  I just liked them even though I must state that the action was different more so than what I see in a Taylor.

Based upon the tonal palette, I'd imagine I'd go for either Larrivee or Breedlove...

More than likely I'd be playing Larrivees.  I've owned them in the past and I've always said if there were no Taylors Larrivees would be the guitar I'd have.

My first guitar ever was a Gibson LG-0 in the '60s...so I might also have kept up with them.

If Taylor never existed I would be playing what I played before Taylor and that was Guild. I still like Guild a lot. If they'd make a jumbo 6 string with a 1 3/4" nut I would buy one.

For years I had played an Ovation. A friend introduced me to a guy who at the time was the manager of the Milling Department at Taylor. We played in a one-off band together. Before the gig, he offered to have Taylor do a set-up on my Ovation. It was very kind of him. When he handed it back to me, he told me that one day I would "own a wood guitar". His words proved to be true; thank you Eric. A few years later I decided to appropriate a tax refund into acquiring a Taylor and the rest, as the cliché goes is history. So I think I'd probably still be playing an Ovation.

Similar thing happened to me. I used to own Ovations. The last one I bought was a 1981 custom legend. The guy who sold it to me said he longed for the sound of an all wood guitar and he said someday I will too. He was right. Five years later I bought my first Guild..my first Taylor came about a year later.

Even though not in possession of one at the moment I have had several Larrivees that i have really enjoyed.....particularly the pv-09 parlor and the omv-60 was spectacular. That one gave its life for my Taylor Custom GA. Pretty happy with my non Taylor lineup at the moment but a new addition or two are in the offing>

Bourgeois & Goodall for sure....maybe Collings if I found one I liked.
I haven't had to pull a lot of necks, but on those that needed action
work, a reset was so simple with a bolt-on.

I'd most likely still be playing a Cole Clark while they are nice plugged in, there is no comparison unplugged to a Taylor and i happen to love the Taylor tone and build quality.

To me it's a no-brainer... I would be playing a Guild. Possibly a Martin, but more than likely another Guild. I have been playing my Guild D-50 since it was new in 1980 and it is an awesome guitar in every way: playabilty, sound, and looks. To be honest, the sound is hard to beat and it made for a difficult decision when looking for a new guitar.

Very unfortunate scenario.

Perhaps Martin, Gibson and/or Guild.  I am also intrigued by McPherson.

Like several others above, I also had an Ovation that I would probably still be playing.  It was a Legend model from 1978 - deep body.   About 15 years ago I took it to a dealer for a fret dress and he said it was one of the best sounding Ovations he had ever heard.   So I must have been really lucky with the top wood that I got on that one.  When I was shopping for a Taylor, I played a Martin Eric Clapton model that I really liked, so that might be my all-wood guitar now if Taylor never existed.
