sometimes you never know what's local dialect until someone else points it out. for exampie, i put my groceries in a bag. in texas they put them in a sack. which is local dialect? both?

i did play croquet when i was a kid.

milk shake it is. ice cream version is a frappe (pronounced frapp).

'grinders' may be widely used in the northeast, but they were subs growing up. might be a greater boston thing.

I routinely confuse co-workers with my Pittsburghese:  chipped ham, city chicken, dippy eggs, gumbands, jag-off, nebby, yinz...

A milk shake was ice cream and milk blended together, but we call subs (or grinders, if you will) "hoagies..."  Eh, what do you expect from a city that also puts fries and cole slaw on their 'samitches...?' ;)

By the way, welcome, "donlyn!"

the new england patriots football team was originally the boston patriots. anyone know what other current nfl team was originally in boston?

thanks for the welcome timfitz63. sounds like you could be as misunderstood as me. ;)

sometimes it's not just words, but also pronunciations. when i was in the army, no one seemed to understand what a quarter (25 cents) was. turned out, all they heard was "kwaata".

Based on the teasers that were aired leading up to the broadcast of "Sons Of Liberty," I suspected as much.  As a result, I didn't watch the series.

... evacuation day march 17 is a city holiday...

Isn't that St. Patrick's Day...?

... the new england patriots football team was originally the boston patriots. anyone know what other current nfl team was originally in boston?

No clue.  I know it wasn't the Steelers...  But congrats on the Super Bowl win!

Yeah, Pittsburghese is the same way:  a mixture of regional dialect and unique pronunciations.  One of the best examples is that we pronounce "downtown" as "dahntahn."

Don't know about the NFL, but the NHL Carolina Hurricanes began life in Boston as the New England Whalers. And of course the MLB Braves began in Boston.

thanks for the welcome shorty. also thanks for the welcome to mgap and anyone i may not have acknowledged.

in respnse to, "... evacuation day march 17 is a city holiday...",
timfitz63 wrote, "Isn't that St. Patrick's Day...?"
tim you are right on. considering the large irish population once associated with boston, many people believed that the holiday was in honor of st patrick and not for the departure of the british from boston on the original evacuation day, march 17, 1776. of course there are still many of irish descent still here. due to envious resentment of people who don't get the day off like school teachers and city workers do, the city holiday may soon cease to exist. personally i would prefer to continue to celebrate the holiday for both reasons.

nobody asked, but i am wicked tired of the snow. especially shovelling it. boston is an old compact city. we have had over six feet of snow within two weeks and there is no place to put it. public transport including subway and commuter rail is currently shut down.

still have snow on the brain. and in my forearms, probably due to excessive heights of snow piles i have to reach when shovelling. boston is now tied with buffalo ny for third most city snowfall this winter. 96 inches, with 93 of them in the last three weeks. cities number one and two are also both in massachusetts, lowell and worcester (pronounced wuss' ta). over a foot fell on sunday and more tomorrow. cities listed by local weather station are usa only; don't know if limited to lower 48.

want to go back to having music on the brain. and in my forearms.
