Elixir HD
« on: January 03, 2015, 06:27:56 PM »
Hi, just picked up some new strings for my 214 and realized I picked up Elixir HD Light, didn't know there was such a thing. A little heavier than the regular lights that I think came on the guitar. Any opinions on whether the HDs would be OK? Tks

They won't hurt anything on your 214.  It can handle all mediums with nothing more than a tiny truss rod adjustment, and that is often not needed.  Most of my GA's have worn mediums for years.  The HD Light set is basically medium trebles with light basses, the opposite of a "bluegrass" set (medium basses with light trebles).  Taylor is putting HD Lights on the new 814's from the factory now, and your guitar can easily handle them.  Whether you like the tonal balance / changes and the different playing feel is a whole 'nother issue.

I was given a new set of HD's recently with the purchase of my new old stock 615ce, but as yet have not put them on anything.  To be fair, I should not render an opinion without actually trying them (a pretty radical thought for a guitar forum).    ;D
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.

according to the Elixir string guide that comes with all new guitars, its an option for 200 series and standard on 300 series guitars. Guess its up to you if wan to use them. Elixir Lights are 12,16,24,32,42,53  HD Lights are 13,17,25,32,42,53 bolder highs, fuller lows. I use both. 12's on my mini hog I had converted when I bought it and 13's HD on my 312ce.
