456CE SLTD
« on: April 11, 2014, 01:36:35 PM »
Hi Guys
Has anyone had the chance to try the Spring Ltd 456CE yet? I tried one a couple of days ago and was very impressed apart from a perceived lack of "bottom end". Terrific playability, wonderful mids and highs. Then I tried a 2002 355 which although was a little worse for wear at twelve years old did sound somewhat fuller. GAS is rearing its head again :)

Sorry.. But I haven't played one yet. I did play a 2014 456 recently at the local store. My ears have been trained to listen for that bottom end in a 12 string.. If it lacks any the 1st time I play it.. It will only bother me more as time progresses.  I was hoping to get a deep growling.. easy playing.. relatively cheap 12 string .. But for now I will keep playing the old Guild F512 till I find an easy playing cheap Taylor...with the bottom end that I love (probably a used one.. which is fine with me).

Was planning to give one a ride while home in Pittsburgh during the Easter weekend.  I'll let you know my thoughts...

Well, I missed the 456ce-SLTD Empire Music had in stock by only a few days; it had been sold by the time I got there...

BUT, Empire did have a standard 456ce in stock, which I believe only differs from the 2014 Spring Limited model in finish (satin vs. gloss) and trimmings (chrome tuners vs. gold; plain ebony bridge pins vs. AB-dot bridge pins).  So I gave that a play.  My impression was that it was noticeably 'darker' than my K66ce or 656ce, but still well-balanced.    I personally thought the 456ce had noticeably more bass response than either of my 12-strings, but less treble; like the tonal range of a K66ce had been shifted toward the bass end at the sacrifice of some treble.

Still not falling in love with Ovangkol myself, but if one is finding the other available tonewoods too 'bright' or 'jangly' sounding, I'd have to say that something like an Ovangkol-bodied 456ce might be much more appealing.  I frankly don't think any other obvious tonewood choices (e.g., Rosewood, Cocobolo) would provide more bottom-end response, so it would probably boil down to what kind of midrange response one wanted to get out of the 12-string ('scooped' = Rosewood; 'flat' = Cocobolo; 'boosted' = Ovangkol).

Sorry about that timfitz-
But I was the one who bought that 456ce SLTD from Empire Music. It just arrived this past Tuesday and I love the sound! I happen to love the look of Ovangkol and wanted a 12 string with it. I already have a 416ce which I love as well. The Ovangkol seems to take some of the jangle out of it but it really shimmers with that great Taylor 12 string sound. The full gloss is just an added bonus.
As for the deep bass, it seems deep enough, but overall sounds well balanced.

;D Huh!  Small world!  No worries, Tony; it's not like I need another one...!   ;)

My brother and I went in there on Friday afternoon, and it was sitting at the front counter, all boxed up and ready to be shipped.  I noted it was heading for New York as Zorie (one of Joe's employees -- not sure of the spelling) was putting on the address label, and jokingly asked her to substitute my address on it...  ;)

Truth is, I was primarily going in to play it out of curiosity and to try to help answer the OP's question.  That's not to say that the notion of purchasing one of the 456ce SLTD guitars hadn't crossed my mind.  But as I said in my previous post, I don't think Ovangkol is quite for me; although your sonic assessment of the 456ce seems to echo mine.

Anyway, enjoy your new guitar!  Joe will take good care of you!

That is so funny that you were there when they were shipping out the guitar to me! Joe does seem like a good guy and really did a good job in shipping. I never ordered a guitar online before but I would trust Empire music again. So far I'm loving this guitar!
Tony.
