How much weight does the ES system add to a Taylor?
« on: March 31, 2014, 12:55:32 PM »
I'm looking for a new 512 and the electronics are not of much importance to me.  But weight is definitely a consideration.  I like lightweight guitars.  How much weight does the standard ES system add to a typical Taylor?

And how much weight does the new ES2 system add?

I did a quick check on the website (which you may have already done), but didn't see the weights listed in the specs. I would think a call to customer service would give you a pretty quick answer.

Hi Gary,

Added weight for an ES is seriously little.  FWIW, I've had the parts in my hands: preamp is a small circuit board with the 3 plastic knobs that weigh nearly nuttin, battery box is plastic where the battery itself is likely similar in weight, the body sensor/harness is mere wire.  The only thing I haven't had my hands on is the fingerboard pup, which is a small, shallow pup which can't be much either.  Moreover, I once had two GAs together, one with and w/o ES, and if I held one in each hand I couldn't tell you which was which.  ES2 is minus the fingerboard pup and body sensor so that's even lighter.  Hope that helps you :)

I have a 916, no cutaway and no electronics. If someone has a 916 e they can weigh I will do the same.

I've had a removed ES in my hands and agree with Edward, the weight of it is insignificant in comparison to the weight of the guitar itself, and it would be hard to tell if you held two guitars blindfolded which one had the ES and which didn't.

the heaviest component in the ES is the 9V battery, which is in the
tailblock that has been routed out for the power supply/output jack

guitars can vary in weight a bit -
click on compare all 3

compare both

414ce
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/414ce/
414ceSLTD - 4 oz heavier with full gloss body & headstock overlay,
gold tuners, ab dot fretmarkers/bridge pins & ES2

314ce - pretty consistent

314

by removing the battery, the weight is negligible & even with the battery,
since it's in the tail block, in the playing position it's likely hardly noticeable
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...
