Hello From Coventry UK
« on: January 22, 2014, 10:13:36 AM »
Hi Guys
Many thanks for letting me join you. What an incredible bunch of enthusiastic, knowledgable and friendly people you all are. I took up the guitar a little over a year ago at sixty years of age to fulfil a lifetime ambition. My local music store was unbelievably helpful, made me feel very comfortable about buying my first guitar. I knew nothing other than reading that a poor instrument will be difficult to play and easy to throw in the cupboard. I narrowed my choice based on what the guy was playing whilst I listened, went away to think about it and returned to buy a Taylor 210. They recommended a local tutor who has been superb and I'm now thoroughly enjoying my path down the road to mediocrity. It sure is tough at my age, but I'm having a ball. I can now just about hack my way through "Wonderwall" and "Take It Easy" with the weird intro. Naturally I'm suffering from acute GAS and have managed to talk my wife into allowing me the privilege of also owning a T5 Custom Koa, a 510CE Koa 2010 Fall Ltd and for some unknown reason a lovely mahogany Strat. Working on the principal that "it's far easier to get forgiveness than permission" I think I'd better keep the GAS under control for a while and get some practise
done. Nice to meet you all.

Welcome to you, sounds like you will fit right in here!  I started playing a little over a year and a half ago (at 51) and went directly into GAS mode also. No harm done and lots of fun. There are a lot of knowledgeable and friendly people on this forum that have helped me out tremendously. I'm sure you will enjoy your time here :)

Welcome to the forum. Just remember, you are never too old to learn. You will do fine and will have a blast with the guitar. Sounds like you have GAS figured out. Some nice Taylors you have!

Hi BobSol, welcome to the forum.

As TaylorGirl says, your never too old, there seems to be a fair few of us that have started in our 50s. I've been at it about 5yrs now and although I haven't managed to achieve mediocrity yet, I'm having good fun trying to get there.

Cracking collection you're building there.

Hi Guys
Many thanks for the warm welcome. I really appreciate the amount of time everyone has dedicated to sharing the Taylor Experience. I'm a precision engineer with years of aerospace experience although bizarrely I now manage a motorcycle dealership (my other passion) and the technical information on the Forum is priceless. I now know how to check neck settings and action adjustment, although I found string heights expressed as 6/64ths instead of 3/32nds a little strange after years in engineering. I've had my 210 a year now and after changing to Elixir Custom Lights and cleaning sharp edges off the bridge it's really come alive. I'm off to the store tomorrow to get a set for the 510 which I've only had for a few weeks. The difference in sound quality between the two isn't as much as I expected which just shows how good the "entry level" Taylors really are. I much prefer the fuller sound of the 510 but at the moment the playability of the 210. The neck width at the nut on the 510 is only .050" wider than the 210 but even at my humble playing level I really notice it. A set of lighter strings and 1/32 off the bridge should sort it, I'll let you know how I get on.
