  • My first Taylor is a GS Mini
114
« on: December 18, 2013, 09:12:25 PM »
Hi Gang
Does anyone here own a 114? I gotta tell ya.. I have been playing a bunch of guitars looking to upgrade from my Mini (which I love Dearly),
I have played 314, 414, 214s and all of them are wonderful. The other day I picked up a 114 at the local CG... this thing really sang to me.
I know .. i know.. real wood vs lams.. the 314 & 414 are super sweet. But I could not put this 114 down. I almost went home and ordered one
from the sweet online store. But I thought maybe i was nuts. Am I over thinking this?
Love to hear your feedback. You all have been great in the past.

BTW Happy Holidays all

I have a 114e and love it too. It's what got me started on The Taylor brand. It's super easy to play and feels great on the lap. In fact, it's the 6 string my husband plays most often now. But if you've played a guitar you like I wouldn't order one, I'd go get the one you played if possible. I do think the 200 series has a slightly better tone depending on the guitar. But there is nothing like having a guitar "sing to you." If you had one do that, I wouldn't pass it up.

i've played several 114s & owned a few -
the ones that i've found that seem to have "a bit more" tone than the others had
wide compression grain on the top, sort of looks the top on the mini i picked up recently

sorry the pic is so huge, but at least it's sharp

my suggestion would be to see if you can make a deal on the 114 at GC -
MF was offering some pretty nice deals, especially a few weeks ago & with
some coercion, GC should be able to apply a discount being offered now

If you can't get them down right now (ask!) - GC is constantly having coupon days.  Sign up with them on-line and they'll email you when they have those sales - you can print the coupon and take to your local GC and get that exact guitar you know you like.  (Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Sweetwater fan and bought my best guitar from them, but if you've had your hands on a guitar you like, stalk it until you can buy it.)

I'm the last to poo poo laminates--I own 5.  I'd be more inclined to get a mahogany or koa laminate ( I have some of each) than a rosewood laminate.

Not every guitar will speak to you, so if you've found one, you really need go back to GC and grab that 114 pronto!

For me and so many others, the 114 was the introduction to the Taylor family and I still play mine more than any other guitar I own. I had truly planned on selling it when I stepped up to a higher number Taylor, but when it came time I just couldn't do it. My 114CE has become the guitar I leave out on the stand for a quick strum or song when I'm passing my guitar room and the first one I reach for when I'm practicing.

Now we don't see many 114's here on the forum, unfortunately, and I have a theory that most 114 owners get intimidated about posting them here after seeing so many high dollar Taylors. My original analogy when I joined was that I was parking a Volkswagen at a Porsche show. But you know what, Volkswagen produces more cars than Porsche does and it's the same for Taylor with the 100 and 200 series guitars.   ;D

The Taylor 100 series are great, my start with the Taylor brand was a 110, it was a excellent guitar.  When a guitar speaks to you like the 114 did snap it up.  It is the one.   ;)

I also have a Taylor GS Mini but want to upgrade. I remember playing a 114 and it not enjoying the sound as much as the 214. I'm going to wait until the spring time and either jump on a 214, 314, or 414. I wonder if anything interesting from Taylor will pop up for the new year. Good time to wait I suppose.

thanks mgap,
the minis do sound great -
that one was the tonal "pick-of-the-litter" to my ear out of 10,
3 other sapeles & 6 rosewoods, with a bolder, rounder punch

the grain pattern sort of reminds me a little of this one

I have a GS Mini Koa.

When I was in the store trying various GS Mini's, the sales guy handed me a 114 to try. It played great & I like the less cumbersome
feel over a Dread.

I would have bought it over the GS Mini but it was a couple of hundred more than the GSM.

So, the 114 is my next Taylor. Saving up for it now. By the end of January I hope. :)

I went to GC to help a friend who is just now (at 63) deciding to learn guitar.  He decided on a nice 114. He's not a big guy, rather small hands, and this fit him like a glove.  I set it up for him (just needed a little neck relief tweak and a few nut slots redone . . . minimal compared to other guitars).  What a nice guitar!  I told him I would surely buy it from him if he decided the guitar wasn't for him.

In my opinion, a very nice and great sounding instrument.
