80/20 vs. PB's
« on: December 13, 2013, 05:18:00 PM »
Jersey tuning asked "Where have the 80/20's gone?" If there is a lack of inventory in stores, I'm wondering why. Is it because most people are moving to PB's or something else instead? 80/20's come stock on our Taylors, but how many of you have started using something else? How many have stuck with the 80/20's after the initial strings were changed?

80/20s but not stock Elixirs - After a ton of experimentation, I favor John Pearse L or M depending on the guitar. Been seeking a warmer tone, while maintaining most of Taylor sparkle. The strings alone rarely do it - best tone combo (for me) has been these strings + tune down half step. Even my GSM is a little power house now.

PB's on most but I'm going to try 80/20's, first on my Taylor GC and maybe others as well.  However DR Sunbeams, which are round core PB' s , are brilliant on my 1930 Martin so that combo is a keeper.  My Froggy Bottom comes from the workshop with 80/20's and I will keep that relationship going for the time being.

Elixer 80/20s on my Taylor 414ce / JPs 80/20s on my Martin.  JPs on the Taylor make my ears bleed from the excessive treble!  :)

I am trying to find the perfect picking string! I like Elixir 80/20's for strumming and for their tone. I find them more difficult to pick.  I like D'Addario PB for picking, but I'm not that fond of their tone.  Right now I'm trying some Ernie Ball Everlast PB lights on my mahogany and they sound very nice for lighter gauge PB strings...they are 11-52's. I need an easier string for picking because if I pick too vigorously for too long it will flair up my elbow.
I do not have any trouble finding 80/20's where I am.

d'addario EXP19s here -
i think that elixir nanoweb 80/20s present the tone of a guitar that may remain on the rack at
the dealer for a little while quite well & that the coating adds a bit of "warmth", which remains
during the extended life of the strings, but for me the fraying, premature breakage & $ is why
i've looked to other strings & found something i like better than "factory". for 80/20s, i like
ghs infinity bronze, but they are not offered in a medium light, bluegrass set "off-the-shelf"

strings are personal preference, like picks, nuts, saddles, bridge pins & tonewoods - find, buy & play what you like :)
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

Tried two different sets of 80/20's on my Taylor GC 12-fret and I think I will be switching back to PB's!

80/20's on everything. Might give the PB's a try just to say I did. :)
