Worn Strings on a Hog????
« on: October 30, 2013, 08:24:30 PM »
I've had my Taylor 324 for several months and typically would have changed the strings by now. However, I really like the way it sounds with the "worn" strings. Am I deceiving myself or do hog-top guitars and worn strings go together like peas and carrots????

Only you can answer that question since sound is  subjective.  What sounds great to you might sound horrible to another. If you like it with worn strings that's what really counts.

I understand that but was curious if others had had similar thoughts/experiences with their hog-topped guitars....

I have never owned a hog top guitar before but after you finally do change strings you might be playing a different tune with your evaluation of the tone.  I always play out the life of my strings, but when I change them out I love the new sound my guitar makes.

I just changed to new strings on my DN-3 on Monday night. I love the sound of new strings. I can't imagine playing on worn strings any more than I'd like driving on worn out tires. However, as I stated earlier that is up to you. A good point was made that if you do change strings you  might be surprised at how good that Taylor sounds compared to now. If you decide to change strings post back and let us know what you think. Good luck.

Out of all the instruments I've ever had, the hog top mini surprises me the most by how great new strings sound. I know the strings are worn when the bass notes start to run together and loose their clarity.

Carefully take off the old ones so you can use them again, if you like the sound of them. I bet they'll end up in the trash.

I'm guessing you are a player who prefers a warmer tone. Hog tops help in that category (I prefer the Mini Hog to the Mini Spruce), but older or warn strings will do the same thing. That's why some people hate new strings. Shortly after I bought my Mini Hog I changed the 80/20's to Phosphor Bronze because they are a bit warmer. Your strings could be flaking and rusting all over and it won't matter as long as you are please with the sound.
