a 2001 712 taylor, some questions
« on: October 24, 2013, 07:00:48 PM »
have been looking at what is supposed to be an original owner 2001 712(cedar/EIR) with no cut or electronics.
i like the idea of the standard scale-don't care for the shortscale mated with the GC body that is currently offered.

this is pre-NT neck-correct?

i've requested a picture showing the neckset(ruler on the fretboard).

what else can you tell me about the 2001 year makes-anything to be concerned about/what else is different other than the NT neck(and how were these necks installed-still bolt on?)

thanks
d

The NT neck began in 99 and was completely phased in by 01. In 01, 700 Series appointments were Koa rosette, Rosewood binding and small MOP dot fretmarkers (98-00 models had Abalone rosettes, black binding large Abalone dot fretmarkers and Cedar tops). A 01 712 will have non-forward shifted bracing with no relief rout and a 4 1/8" body depth (current models are 4 3/8").

When the NT was introduced there was a lot of speculation about how it was being rolled out, but it seems to have been somewhat haphazard. There are some Taylors built in 1999 and 2000 that don't have it and some that do, and seems to be no discernable pattern. My 1999 714 has it, but apparently there are other 700s of the same vintage that don't.

thanks for this info-exactly what i was looking for.

so the nonforward shifted bracing, no relief rout and the less deep body= ?less projection, less bass?
what will you typically find with this year make compared to a current GC of same wood combo(soundwise)?

thanks

**i've never played anything before 2005 from Taylor-isn't the neck profile going to be a little different on the 2001 vs current?

I imagine, since the neck would probably be NT, that the neck profile will be much the same as todays profile.  The one thing that will be different is the construction-finger joint at the base  of the headstock as opposed to the scarf joint of today.
