I'm mainly a mandolin picker, trying to consider if there is a large body taylor folks use for flat picking that compares to Martin 'boxes'.

Hi Jake, welcome!  I mainly play flatpicking tunes - WBB, Billy in the Lowground, Black Mountain Rag, St. Anne's Reel, Jimmy Brown the Newsboy, and loads of others.

I've often thought a Martin might be a better fit for this genre but I do love my Taylors.  Perhaps one day I will add a GA or 12 fret slothead hog Taylor to my list.

Thanks for the reply!

My wife has a w12ce that I'd like to post on the forums here.  It's a great little guitar, but that's the problem... it's little!  And has a cut away!  So, what's great for singer songwriter stuff, isn't cutting it flat picking.  I especially notice the wide neck on her guitar in comparison to Martin D-18, 28's etc.

We'll see what ends up happening, I do know playing her guitar has improved my mandolin picking.  Like cross-training in sports I think, playing a little of this and a little of that probably helps us all improve a little.

Pure Tone,

Thanks!  Good looking guitar, I'm gonna look into it a little more tonight.

I played the 518, 618, and 918 and of the three I really liked the 518 the best.

Although I agree wholeheartedly with the Grand Orchestra (x18) suggestion, you may want to try a Grand Symphony (x16) as well. An awesome flatpicking guitar.
