618e Expression system sounds horrible
« on: March 18, 2013, 09:06:43 AM »
Anyone else having issues plugged straight into PA ?  Sounds like I'm in a cave.  My 210e blows it away plugged in and has way more volume. Tried Baggs DI, same thing.  I have to turn my PA volume almost all the way up to get it to the level of the 210 at 3. Had a show this weekend and put it back in the case at sound check and grabbed the trusty 210.  Help please!

Are you using a balanced cable?  ES is designed for and works best with a balanced cable (XLR, TRS).

1/4" to DI and then XLR from DI to PA.  I first tried a 1/4" to 1/4" on PA and it didn't make much difference. A little more volume with the DI, but still bad sound.

Sumptin sounds wrong to me.  Assuming the new GOs use the same ES as the other models (and I've not heard there is any indication that it is not), then you should have plenty of signal going from ES to your LRBaggs then out to the board.  Going balanced helps boost signal strength, but that should be a non-issue when using your Baggs (the balanced line can even overwhealm a PADI's input side even when gained down all the way, so unbalanced 1/4" is better here ...I've done it FWIW).

Shall I assume your ES controls were at noon, with the ES volume at noon-to-1:00?  And that your input gain was set appropriately on your Baggs (PADI or Venue?)   Also check your body sensor switch on your ES preamp (though that would affect your tone, and not result in low gain to your DI).  If all checks out, including with your Baggs, then I'd definitely give Taylor a call as I've never had any ES I've ever ownd suffer from low output unless it was faulty (yup, I've had em go bad).  Hope that helps you a bit.

I've had similar issues due to a dying battery. I've never experienced this with my Taylor, but its worth a shot before trying something more involved.

Thanks for the info gentlemen.  First thing I did was change battery.  Called Taylor and have to setup a trip to Chicago to have it looked at.  Taylor rep. says somethings wrong.  He did tell me to check the magnetic pickup to see if any metal or string ends are stuck to it.  I have not changed strings, but you never know.

I am glad to hear you are getting a tech to check it over.

FWIW, I have used my 618e in the same config you describe (1/4 to DI to PA) and it sounds amazing. You are going to love it when it's fixed. All my controls set to 1200. I let the soundboard guy work the sound.

Definitely not normal ... the only time I have had anything remotely like you describe with either my 414ce or 814ce was when the battery was just about gone (extremely low) ... get it checked ... I hope for a simple and speedy remedy ...

The Expression System was designed to make a DI box unnecessary. By using TRS to XLR straight into the PA one doesn't need a DI. If the PA has a TRS jack, then a TRS to TRS cable can also be used. This doesn't address the problem you are describing but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

It is possible that by DI, you mean a preamplifier with equalization controls that happens to have a DI output and that you are using it, not for that output, but for its equalization controls. If I were going to plug into an external preamp, I'd first try a TRS to XLR cable plugged in to an impedance transformer and then into the preamp.

+1 from me; my 618e sounds brilliant plugged in. Here's hoping you get it sorted pronto.

How are you supposed to do that? It's in the neck pocket, accessible only by removing the neck.
Whatever he's smoking, make him share!! ;)

Sorry.  The humbucking coil that is mounted just to the side of the pre-amp on the underside of the top.
