Hi...I signed up earlier this year
« on: March 12, 2013, 01:09:09 PM »
Hi....I signed up earlier this year and never got active in this forum.  I currently own a taylor 814ce tobacco sunburst finish.  I have been taking lessons for over a year now and learning how to read music, which I'm fairly decent at now.
My question is this.  I have learned to play these little classical practice songs but my desire is playing Eagles music and similar type music.  I want to know if I'm learning At a slow rate or am I on schedule with my goals?
Oh ya and the 814ce is such an awesome guitar and the finish is beautiful.

Thanks, Larry

Hello Larry, welcome.

You'll have fun here.  A lot of great folks who know a lot about Taylors.  We learn from eachother.

Be patient in learning guitar.  If you learn the fretboard (notes) and chords, it does take some time.  Just be patient and consistent with your practice.  You have a great guitar to learn on.  Boy, how I wish I had a guitar like that when I was learning!  It took me 29 years before I got my 414. I did have a nice Guild before that, but now I'm hooked on Taylors.  You probably will be too.

Hey there Larry. Glad you decided to chime in.

I would say you are right on target with your plan and goals. Now that you are a year in why not pick up an Eagles chord book and give those songs a shot as you continue to progress with learning the classical pieces? Your lessons will continue to enhance your technique and understanding of theory and standard notation while the Eagles will start to give you a better feel for strumming. Can't hurt.

Hey Larry and welcome.
When I first started playing, after I'd learned all the chords(G, C, D, Am, Em), I got the majority of my instruction from other musicians. I was fortunate enough to have a good set of pipes, so my singing got my foot in the door.
Find yourself someone to jam with. You won't regret it.

Hi Larry and welcome.  It sounds like you're laying down a good foundation.  The best way to take it to the next level is to find someone else or a group to play with.  It helps jamming along to youtube, but nothing takes the place of live practice.  Maybe your teacher can sponsor a jam session with other students.  Enjoy!

Hi Larry and welcome to the forum! I also enjoy Eagles music and if you have some basic chords down I may have a suggestion for you. I have a songbook titled "Eagles-favorites to strum and sing" by Alfred publishing. The book features many classic songs and several are quite easy to play. I am sure you could locate one.  I try not to put a gage on my progress as I am having a lot of fun and that is what matters! Enjoy!   :)
