WOW!!
« on: January 23, 2013, 07:41:21 PM »
If I counted correctly, the 2013 Taylor Price List lists 224 unique guitar models.

That's nuts!

I think it's great that there is something for everyone but as a newbie I found it rather confusing.  When I was first looking at places like Guitar Center I really had no idea of what to do and often just left BC I didn't want to make a bad choice for what I wanted in a guitar.  Not sure how I would've ever figured it out before a first purchase BC I didn't know about the Road Shows and Find your Fit until much later on (2 guitars in).

Fortunately thru the grace of Bill in the acoustic room at Chuck Levin's Music Center stumbled onto the 516 FLTD and have stuck with the GS body 'tho I like the GC a bit better as far as comfort.

I merely counted the guitars that Taylor listed in the price list. It's possible my count was off some, but not by 61.

Jim

"BTO" isn't a model.

I'm talking about regular production guitars, not limiteds or BTO's.

Frankly, I can't imagine Taylor being able to sustain such variety for too long.  As much as I love the company and it's products this just seems like a bubble that's bound to burst.  It would be interesting to compare such a number to what Taylor was making in 2005, 1995, 1985, 1975.  Show me the graph and I'll show you a meteoric rise in offerings.
1989 712
1992 410
1992 412
1995 410
1995 422
1996 412-M
1996 450
1997 412
1997 420-R
2007 GC3

Considering the way Taylor build their guitars and that a majority of that number quoted (whichever number it is) are slight variations on a base model (e.g. adding electronics and/or a cutaway), I wouldn't be too worried about Taylor not being able to keep up. Though the sheer number of unique guitar models may have increased, I think the variation has actually decreased now that they're not doing the acoustic series.

In short, Taylor has simplified things though it may seem like the opposite at face value.

it really is not more models so much as before. More now you have the option with out doing a modify a model to get say a 810 with nothing else on it( used to be DN8)  Now you hve say a 810 then 810e then 810ce. Really not 3 models as much as options. While you could get these before via modify a model or ADD something.    It used to be standard production DN8 and a 810ce. the only thing changing is they went all numbering system and added the "e" OPTION to standard production wehre before it was a special order by dealers.

they still don`t have the crazy model variation like Martin by a LONG shot!
