A (martin) friend played my Taylor
« on: January 06, 2013, 05:26:13 AM »
I had a buddy bring over his new Martin 2012 D-28 to my house and we were both shocked! We played his new Martin for about an hour passing it back and forth. What a wonderful sounding guitar. I just added a new set of strings to my 910 last week and they have settled in quite nicely. I later brought my 910 out and we were playing and both guitars. Both played well together. My 910 was made in 2010 and really starting to open a lot more over the past month. I used a Tonerite last year and I use it for a couple days a month over the last year. I play it a couple hours a day.Anyway my friend played it again and and was so impressed he is looking for a 910 now. He loves the sound and how well it respondes and how clear it is. He has always been a Yamaha guy until his wife took him and bought a D-28 last week. He has lusted over a D-28 for years and now thinks he made a mistake. He has played my 910 a few times since I had it.How does one explain this to there wife? He wants a Taylor but not many 910's are out there. He has been talking with Taylor and looking at the BTO program. Any thought guys? Anyone know where a 910 can be had? I forgot he added some Elixer med PB's and it sounds a little better. I think it sounds great and should open up and sound amazing in a few years.I suggested he keep it and see if he bonds with it. He has about 2 weeks left before he can return it. What do you guys think?

If he is within the return window I suggest he return it until he decides which he wants.

Maybe he could get hold of a HD28 at the store and try it out. There is quite a difference between the standard D28 and the HD28... The HD is very open.. and in your face...just a suggestion, but I would hope that he has already done that.

the standard 910 was discontinued in 01 -
it was possible to the delete the cutaway & electronics on a 910ce
through 06 & the 910 legacy (& 810) were available from 07-10

the 910 legacy was shown as having standard II bracing on the last iteration of the website (11)
even though the model was discontinued (not on the 11 price list) & CV bracing was introduced
on some of the standard models in 09 (i could understand the legacy models keeping the standard II
bracing for tonal differentiation, as the appointments were sort of a 'throwback' to the 93-00 models)

i would suggest your friend give Taylor customer service a call tomorrow to verify that the
09-10 910 legacy models had CV bracing & then finding a 09 - current 910ce may give him
some idea of what to expect (bone nut & saddle) or a 810ce (different wood grade, Tusq) -
he should also be able to verify (or perhaps maybe not for a few more weeks)
if it will be possible to order a 910 (no c, no e) if he wants to go with a new one

spec-wise, the D28 has non-forward shifted unscalloped 5/16" bracing, the D35 has 1/4" bracing
the HD28 has scalloped bracing (5/16") & the HD35 has scalloped 1/4" (the MP models are available
with a slimmer neck profile, 1 3/4" nut & madagascar rosewood back & sides) & the HD28V & D42
have forward shifted scalloped 5/16" bracing - a good bit of difference in the bracing & likely tone also

not trying to 'steer' in one direction or the other, martin offers many more options in standard
spruce/rosewood dreadnoughts (there are others) which are likely to be able to found if a dealer
carries an extensive inventory, but in terms of consistency between models, it's possible that the
next D28 or D35 he tries could be 'it' (or not), but i'd give martin at least a couple more shots -
a set of 80/20 (GHS infinity bronze, perhaps) &/or a Tusq saddle may add a little clarity to the D28

He tried the HD and i was not his style. He is taking back next week. He has located a 910 already.

Looks like he is taking it back on Friday. He is going to register on here when he gets a 910 or 810.

Update!!!!
On Friday my friend took off work, returned his Martin. He brought home a DN8. Beautiful sounding guitar. We played it all day Saturday. He was  able to A&B the Martin and Taylor and he is happy to have returned it. His wife was happy, he saved a few bucks also. He was able to buy steaks and cooked dinner Sat. night for the wives and I. I took my 910 to their home and we had a wonderful day with hours of guitar playing, watching some football and visiting with a great friends.  What could be better? Man that DN8 was a treat to play.

I had a similar experience with a friend who has a Martin D-15 (all hog dread).  Several times he related that every time he goes to GC and plays "the wall", he realizes the D-15 is enough for him.  Then I went over his house to jam around and brought my '97 412 (!) to accompany his dread.  Aside from the volume issue, the 412 did a fine job representing Taylor that night.  Since then he contacted me and said he wants to pursue a 1 3/4" nut guitar.  Not so sure about the body type he's looking for but by playing the 412 he was sold on the neck width.  I quickly told him that I think most if not all Taylors have the 1 3/4" nut now, I hope I'm correct in that assumption.  It's pretty hard to keep up with the changes Taylor brings to the table every year, no? :)

I can be wrong bit 300 series and up has 1 3/4 nut. 100/200 has 1 11/16. Someone please chime in and confirm.

standard nut width on the 98-00 300 series/up X10 & X15s was 1 11/16" (it changed to 1 3/4" in 01) -
just measured a 91 412 & it was 1 11/16" (not certain if that width was an option or if it was standard)

i'd venture to guess that in the past 10 years, the most popular nut width on all solid wood steel 6 string Taylors was 1 3/4" -
standard width on 300/up 12 strings (& nylons) is 1 7/8"
