Taylor Archive
« on: December 02, 2012, 05:09:57 PM »

I am frustrated beyond belief at the Taylor Website. All of sudden you can't find the specs on older guitars.
Yea, and I will post this on the Shannon's opinion of the new Website. >:(

In the meantime can anybody help me with the specs on a 94 710? Especially the nut width?
Speaking of nut width, how about width of a  2003 412 RCE? And a 2000 714CE?

Even most break and mortar places give me different information, less much the internet.

Sorry if I breaking the forum rules. But this is apparently the only place I can get some peace.

as far i can tell, Taylor's website has gone through 5, or so, iterations that i can remember -
changes came when major line revamps were done (98-00, 01-03, 04-06, 07-11 & current)

i don't recall seeing much information on pre 97 models on the site
(the earliest Wood & Steel i remember seeing was winter 01, volume 30) -
save for any dealer material, hardcopies of Wood & Steel would be a good source

94 710
pre NT mahogany neck (25.5" scale)
standard nut width 1 11/16"
satin rosewood headstock overlay
chrome Grover 14:1 tuners
ebony fretboard with large ab dot fretmarkers
square shoulder upper bout
standard sitka top
scalloped 3/8" x-bracing (non-forward shifted)
black binding
3 ring ab rosette
'smiley' ebony bridge (holes in an arc) with ab dot ebony pins

label is on the neck block rather than on the inside of the back &
original deluxe case is smooth brown tolex with low-cut
reddish pink lining, leather handle & 4 brass latches

the standard nut width on the 300/up series X14ce/GAs has been 1 3/4"

seeing that this is an unofficial site, there are no Taylor employees here
on a regular basis, so contacting customer service directly is the best option

in the meantime, hopefully this helps a little

i would venture to guess that Shannon has a lot on his plate -
just keeping up with current models/specs is 'a job' & there's been no
official announcement of 210/214ce koa LTDs  (they're in shops already)

i've noticed that only the current year model LTDs have full specs &
perhaps, at least for the time being, there's a reason for that

a little research & comparing of info from various sources never hurts -
on the older models (pre 95), things are a bit harder to find & there are very few 'absolutes'
so believe me, it's not just matter of rattling specs off 'without blinking' or thinking about it
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

Whoops,

Sorry Shannon,
Thank you Michaelw for clarifying.

As far as the specifics on various models, innovations, years and Limited Editions, you always make it look so easy.

On another note, when I go to the Taylor Web site I find it extremely easy to navigate.
It is well structured, with the look and feel of Taylor Quality and of their commitment to offering the best possible customer service.

So, Shannon, Keep up the good work. You have listened well and have exceeded our expectations.
Wondering how the new Limiteds are going to be classified?  Winter Editions?  Late Fall Editions?

Wow. I am at loss of words. Thank you is a much over used word but is all
I'll I got.

Thank you to the wonderful individuals that took a moment and addressed my post.

I did find out that the 4 series RCE had a 1 3/4 nut width.

Unfortunately I have to have the little smaller nut width because I have Multipie Sceloris  And I find that I don't care much for Martins necks.
Not sure why. Personal preference I suppose.

So thanks guys and gals. I do appreciate you.

I will continue to look, I am still looking at the 94 710 since it does have the smaller nut width. But I am certainly
concerned about the age.

the standard nut width on pre 01 X10 & X15 models is 1 11/16" & most
pre NT neck models (especially, pre 95 models) tend to have a thinner
(lower) profile as more hand sanding was done in the neck building process -
some of the X12 models have 1 11/16" nut width as well (with a 4 1/8" body depth) but i imagine
by around 94, the standard width was 1 3/4", with some being 1 7/8" (00 chris proctor signature)

in terms of all solid wood models, the 03-06 214 & 04-06 210 have a standard nut
width of 1 11/16", as do the solid top 07 100/200 series & the baby & GS mini models

the square shoulder upper bout on a pre 97 X10 model is closer in feel (imho)
to a hummingbird, wheras the 97-current models have more of a martin D contour

the 94 would be worth a look, imho -
i would check it's overall condition (fretwear, saddle height, action, any cracks) &
signs of humidity/temperature extremes (cold-checking, sharp fret ends, etc)

if the neck requires a reset, the process should not be as involved (or expensive) as a dovetail neck

there were 4 runs of rosewood 400 LTDs in 03 that i can remember -
LTD, R, L2 & L5 (some of which were gloss body or satin finish with gloss top) &
the standard nut width on the steel 6 string models was 1 3/4"

the legacyweb link looks like it goes back to 09 for LTDs -
there was a 'backdoor' that was shut about 6 months ago, so it might
be good to look around for info (i wouldn't expect it to stay 'open')

it's all about why you play ...

Warbears, I'm curious why you are concerned with the age of a '94.  I much prefer the older Taylors for several reasons and have had no issues buying the older models, even with only photos to go by...! ;D
