ES plays thru phono input
« on: August 14, 2012, 01:22:39 PM »
Hello Taylorites.  I was screwing around plugging my 414ce into various devices when I discovered it plays thru the phono inputs of my old stereo Hifi system.  A 1/4 TRS plug in the guitar to a splitter that gives two RCA male plugs.  Not a bad sound but needs a bit less bass on the hifi amp than recorded music.   Who has phono inputs anymore?

It's an old legacy Pioneer stereo hifi hooked up to a pair of large (heavy) high-end speaker enclosures. I can rattle the walls on 4.

Having fun.

Man, I've played more than one guitar through more than a few stereos. It's always fun, but it's hardly high fidelity!

When I was 14 or 15 years old, I hooked up my Silvertone electric guitar directly to the leads on the back of  the phono cartridge of my father's Dual turntable and played through the 4 speakers of his Grundig stereo system. I wrapped telephone wire around the guitar cord plug and then around the cartridge leads.

The phono input has an EQ curve built-in to accommodate the recording process used to make records.

That would be the RIAA equalization curve where high frequencies are boosted during recording and attenuated during playback. The net result is reduced noise similar to what Dolby later provided for the tape medium.

I once played mine through two tin cans and some kite string. But I too didn't get enough bass.

You might try bigger cans.

Yes I think jumbo cans will offer a bit more bass.

if the cans don't quite cut it, these just might do the trick ;)
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...
