First public gig in a while...
« on: May 20, 2012, 01:02:08 AM »
We are settled in at Friday Harbor for the summer.  I'll be driving a whale watch boat as my "fun summer job."  Tonight, I entertained a boat owners group out on the docks...

So, just in case this captain thing doesn't work out, I'll still have something to fall back on.  ;)  And the GSmini did a fine job!

Best wishes,
Captain Jim

It was fun.  While we're in a slip, my wife insists that I "play quiet" so we don't disturb the neighbors.  ;)  This time, all the neighbors came out to watch and listen.  8)

Mic stands and guitar amps?  Wow, Jim, that's what I call a fully provisioned boat.

What are you using for amplification, Jim? I can see it down front but can't quite make out what it is......Roland Cube?

On a side note, I see you're sporting a Taylor gig bag.  I bought mine last year and am very happy with it!  Great for a solo gigger!

And speaking of amps.. when I can't find an outlet (or I'm playing on the beach at an event), the Roland Ac-33 does a nice job.  Very good sound IMHO from a battery-powered amp!

The amp is a Roland Cube Street - two channels, for guitar and vocal.  Small and lightweight, perfect for on the boat.  It's not something you'd use for a big room, but there were about 80 - 100 people at the gathering (plus people listening on other docks), and everyone said they could hear it just fine.

We left Friday Harbor this morning and are now in Sidney, Vancouver Island, BC Canada.  Think I'll do some picking this evening to entertain ourselves... no satellite TV to be had, and the Canada TV is... different.  ;)

Best wishes,

Hi Mike,

After getting a Taylor, my wife looked at "stuff"... I wanted the suede guitar strap (it stayed home with the other guitar) and a shirt; my wife thought I should have that Taylor gig bag.  Honestly, before it came, I thought it was a lot of money for a bag... yep, I was wrong; it is SO worth it.  It holds a mic, a couple XLR mic cords, a half dozen guitar cables, an EQ pedal, a TC Helicon harmonizer pedal, power cables for the amp and harmonizer, an extension cord, a box of picks, a small electronic tuner, a cleaning cloth, and it could still hold more.  Nicely made.  Plus, it says "Taylor".  8)  Sure makes easy work of keeping all the stuff organized.

Best wishes,
Captain Jim

Thanks for the kind words, Shayne.  To give a better idea of the size of the crowd and the ability of that little amp...

(photos courtesy of other folks who were there)  Those shots were early on; the crowd grew as it got closer to mealtime.  ;)

The guitar channel was up about as loud as it could be without distorting; the vocal channel was only on 2 - 3.  The ES-Go does need a little "help" from the EQ pedal.  There is no electric on that breakwater, so running on battery power was the easy option.  The guy who put on the gathering was grateful to be able to use the microphone while handing out an entire dock cart of door prizes... he said he went hoarse doing that last year.

On another thread, there was the discussion of "Would you let someone else play your Taylor?"  A couple friends asked if they could do a song or two, so I turned the equipment over to them.  He has a Martin D-18 (didn't have it with him).  This morning, I got an e-mail from him, asking about "that great Taylor" he played, "It was really a comfortable size."

Yep.  :)  Perhaps another convert.

Best wishes,
Jim
