Not sure how well known he was in the States, but Bert Weedon, who was a guitar legend in the UK, has died today aged 91.
His 'Play in a Day' guitar tutorial book was used by many budding guitarists including Eric Clapton, Brian May, Paul McCartney etc... He was also a performer and a presenter on many TV shows in the 60s and 70s.
I didn't manage to 'Play in a Day', but that was my fault not Bert's.
Bert was an inspiration to many aspiring guitarists, and brought a lot of pleasure to many people.
