case study, part deux ...
this time, it's personal ;)

there are a couple more differences that Cindy mentioned previously,
that i misinterpreted, between the 2007-11 & 2012 deluxe cases -
there is a noticeable difference in the depth of the lining around the body
the 2007 case averages just over 1.25"

the 2012 case averages just under 1"

also, the outer dimensions of the 2012 case are slightly smaller,
about a 1/4" difference around the perimeter of the body

whether or not the differences between the 2 cases would be a significant factor in preventing damage to
a guitar in the event of a mishap is quite questionable & i feel that if a guitar were to sustain any damage in
a 2012 case,  that subjected to the same conditions, the guitar would be damaged in the 2007-11 case also -
in other words, i doubt a guitar damaged in a 2012 case would have escaped unscathed in a 2007-11 case

these are very nice well-built & rugged cases, imho, but they are not  in
the same class as the super hi $ weatherproof composite or ATA road cases

... Does anyone have a deluxe case with the narrower padding and a narrower neck width?

Cindy, my 2010 Grand Concert BTO case has the same dimensions that you show: 5-1/2 inch neck width and 1-inch padding around the body.  Also the same latch on the bottom.

Say, does anyone know the inside surface areas of the different case sizes?  :P :D

I have also noticed a change in the cases we've been receiving since the beginning of the year.

I bought a used Ibanez AEL50 online a couple of years ago. It included a Taylor case. The case was pretty scuffed up (not cut or torn). My Mr. Clean Magic Eraser removed all of the scuff marks.

The case is brown with gold hardware (one latch is missing) and it has a 3 dial combination lock (doesn't work). Inside, it has 2 movable/removable foam pieces.

I'll post some pics in a few days.

I've got a 2011 815ce, and my case is like your new one - narrower neck width and the padding is about 5/8" thick.  And the guitar is a really snug fit.  The manufacture date on the guitar (which doesn't necessarily correlate with the case stock, I know) is October 6th of last year, so it's pretty recent.

Here are comparison pics of my BTO deluxe case vs. the replacement deluxe case I was given for my 414ce

The case I got with my 814 is the same as the Replacement 414.......leaving me kinda p'd that they have a better case that I didn't get with one of their higher end units.    :o

The case with 614ce that I just bought a  few weeks ago already has the cover on the handle coming loose.  Speaking of a snug-fit, I have to really line it us just perfect to get the guitar into the case and push it in.  It fits super-snug!  Don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

In my experience, the Taylor cases I've received with a brand new guitar have always been a very tight fit to the guitar.  Although these are apparently the older style with the 1-inch padding.   It loosens up somewhat after a few months, but I still need to press my guitars down into the cases when putting them away.  I think its a good thing; a nice snug fit - no sliding around in the case.

All of my taylors have the wider neck including my early 2011.  They all have 1" in padding around them.  My Martin M-36 case varies in the padding thickness, from 1" to 1/2".  I does have a 6 1/4" wide neck.

I notice that my 2011 714ce has a case with 4 bumper feet and a latch in the middle of the bottom, which means you need to put both of Cindy's cases together to have the style of mine, weird huh, all the other cases I have just have a latch center bottom.

Thanks for the replies...so it sounds like at least a couple members have the same style as my replacement case. I wondered if it was a legitimate case because the employee was supposed to call the Taylor rep but didn't. So now I wonder what their black 3xx and 4xx cases look like? Has anyone received a 2012 3xx or 4xx guitar yet? Or what about the spring limiteds?

If I take my 414ce out of the house, maybe I'll just swap cases temporarily with one of my others. ;)

My 414ce, manufactured around end of October 2011 came with a black case matching your replacement case ie narrower width etc.

Question, do you see a difference in the quality of the covering material?
