Is my guitar in need of a set up??
« on: March 17, 2012, 10:57:00 AM »
Have a new 714ce and  have played for abouth a month or so. Today i noticed a rattling sound on the high E-string. The rattling sound is only on the 5 and 6th frets.

Anybody got an idea to what this is?

It could be that you need a slight tweak to the truss rod to give a bit more relief to the neck. Or, those frets might be a bit high. Either issue would be easy for a tech to fix.

Well, the only thing that can be said, with any certainty, is that you're getting a rattling on the high E string on the 5th and 6th frets. There's simply no way to even come close to diagnosing what the cause is.

Get it to a tech...

The season are a changing.  My guitars need a truss rod adjustment twice a year.  With Taylors it is pretty easy to do a truss rod adjustment.  Give it a try ;), if that does not do the job take it to a Taylor dealer and they could diagnose it for you, and probably fix it on the spot. ;D

Yes, I'd tweak the truss rod, try some new strings and make sure they're snug in with the bridge pins. True about the seasons changing, I've had problems like this that have gone away by themselves.

Don't fret... or at least don't fret near the 5th fret!

Changed the strings. Did not do anything with the rattling sound. Gave the truss rod a litle tweak, and that seem to do the trick. Rattling sound gone.........for now

Thanks

^^^^^As long as you can deal with the slightly higher action, you are good to go!
