Question about the Taylor guitar strap.
« on: March 14, 2012, 04:07:16 AM »
Hi,

I have a baby Taylor guitar and I have just brought a Taylor guitar strap but when I put it onto my guitar, my guitar turns upside down/verticle if I don't hold on to it... (sorry, I'm really bad at explaining :P )

So look at this photo:

She isn't holding the guitar but it still stays in the horizontal position. Why doesn't my Guitar do that with the strap on?

Sorry if it's really confusing.

Thanks in advance :)

Maybe it's because the Baby Taylor is much lighter.

I think it has to do with wether the strap is smooth or not.  A smooth strap will most likely slide on your shoulder while a not-smooth one shouldn't.  Taylor has some suede straps that look nice - but a bit pricey IMHO.

The professionals have guitar techs that set them up - maybe TS has something in the back holding up the guitar or maybe her right hand is keeping it from sliding.

I would go to the store and try some out.

I bought the suede Taylor strap... besides the fact that it is gorgeous, the suede is like non-skid - the guitar doesn't move at all.

I bought a Taylor suede strap from a friend on another forum for about half price, and love it! I don't know why your Baby, Alice, is flipping when you don't hold it. My Taylors don't do that. Not to be indelicate, but would it do this if you lowered it a bit? Would a slight repositioning of the strap button change its center of gravity sufficiently? (I don't have a Baby, so I honestly don't know, just trying to help.)

Good luck, and let us know what you discover.

Taylor Swift also has a wireless rig hanging on hers ,maybe 2(in ear monitors). Where is the strap button located? As Cotten suggested,it may just be location, location, location.

Thanks for the help :)

The strap buttons are at the top and bottom of the guitar.
I think maybe the baby Taylor is too light... :( I've tried adjusting the stap too it but it still stays the same.

Perhaps a small guitar is more likely to flip when it is held somewhat horizontally. Are you doing that?  A more proper position is neck upward like in the picture (or even more).

The slippage depends on the fabric  on the person and the lining on the strap.  I got the deluxe leather Taylor strap which has a smooth leather inner. It can slip or adjust as desired (changing from seated to standing for instance)  on any fabric.   The leather is new and stiff and not as comfortable as my old web strap.   Suede lining would be nice if you want no slip whatsoever.

I'm sure your strap came with a string hanging off of one end. You can use that to secure your strap around the headstock. Here's a neat device Martin makes:

 Hope this helps.

I don't like the idea of attaching a strap to the headstock. I know lots of people do it, but I want to leave the necks on my guitars alone.....they don't need any more stress on them from anything.  That's just my personal bias.

I think a lot of guitars tend to want to rotate way from your body when just hanging from the strap.  It's just the weight distribution, I think.  I can let go of my Ibanez and it'll usually stay put, but not 100% of the time, but then it is a pretty small body, but overall heavier than a straight acoustic.

Also check out Amazon for some of the Taylor guitar straps. ;)

Taylor straps cost a little less from Amazon than directly from the Taylor website and shipping is free.
