Taylor GC 8 Strings...your favorite(s)?
« on: March 04, 2012, 11:00:59 PM »
Today I put a set of DR Rares on my 2011 GC 8 at the suggestion I received on a AGF thread.  To me, they make they make the GC 8 have a more vintage sound.  Just my interpretation of how they sound.  I may go back to the Elixir's next time, but I do really like the warmer, lush sound they produce and they will definitely be a string I will use again.   (plus, it sounds like a new and different guitar to me, which for under $10 is cheapest new guitar thrill you can get!  :) )

I am just wondering what other strings, other than the Elixir's other GC 8 owners have tried and there thoughts, thanks..

You may want to experiment with the Newtone PB strings.  I have found that they have a much more warm tune than the Elixir's do.

I bought a set of "Reds" (Mediums) with the intention of putting them on my GS Mini.  I did but two of the strings (G and D) were totally dead - "thud" !!!  So I took them off immediately.  I was kind of dissapointed because the E and A were very nice - pretty warm but still had a bit of Zing to them.  I contacted the Tech Support guys and they sent me out another set (Lights this time).  I plan to try them out on my GC8 the next time I change strings.

The problem is the Elixir PBs just last too long !!!

On the GC8 I have tried Martin SP Lifetimes and Cleartone PBs - both did not last half as long as the Elixirs and suffered significant finger "squeak" although the tone was great on both - definitely warmer than Elixir 80/20s and maybe only slightly warmer than Elixir PBs.  I also tried the D'Addario PB coated strings and they didn't hold up well at all.

So for now the Elixir PBs are on the guitar and will likely be there for a while.  When they do finally wear out, I will try the Reds and report back...

I've Martin FX (flexible cores)lts. (12-54)on my 412 CE and my GS6E. They sound great on the 412 and just OK on the GS6.Maybe the GS needs that little extra tension.I'm gonna tweak the GS this weekend.Raise the action from 4/64 to 5/64, or maybe change the shims to get a little more saddle w/the lower action and put on some D'Addario  EXP 80/20 lt.top/med. bottom(12-56).I love the way "Bluegrass" strings sound on dreadnaught guitars, so the GS6 should be similar. The low action on the GS6 is a dream to play, but the cannon sound on the bass notes needs a little more powder.

I think rosewood guitars (with their scooped midrange) really love DR Rares.  I've tried everything on my 814, and nothing delivers the punch of the Rares.  Great string.
