Taylor sighting and shoutout on American Idol tonight
« on: February 28, 2012, 10:23:36 PM »
I was never big on American Idol, but my wife enjoys following it casually, and I've learned to like watching it with her. Tonight, one of the top contestants, Phillip Phillips, played a GS7... and Randy gave him props for it! Even knew the model name! I thought that was pretty cool.

I also thought it was cool that it was a non-CE model... :)

I thought he was trying too hard to be Dave Matthews.

Well, yes and no.

He referred to it as a "gold top".

This is a "gold top":

Haha, I couldn't quite hear what he said -- that's pretty great. The cedar on his GS7 did have a really nice golden look to it though... :)

Actually, Randy asked him if it was a gold top J45, which is a Gibson.  Phillps corrected him on the model.

Any DMB fan that's seen this guy play can tell he's emulating Dave.  I know I did.  Only later did I find out he lists Dave Matthews as one of his influences.  Obvious.  I'm not going to get into the "copycat" discussion as I've seen enough of it on another board.

His GA7 is a nice guitar.  Dave plays the same model on several songs.

Phillip has made it through to the next round with no problems, as of 3/8/12.  I think he will fair nicely in this competition, so we should see him and his GS7 a few more times.  I have seen several Taylor over the last couple of years in the Idol show.
