String spacing vs nut width
« on: February 04, 2012, 07:46:02 PM »
I know that 100/200 series have 1 11/16" nut width and the higher level models have 1 3/4".  I read in another thread that the actual string spacing difference is more than the nut width difference.  Is this right?  And if it is, is the 1-11/16" nut string spacing more or less than 1/16" different from the 1-3/4" nut spacing?  I am more comfortable with a wider nut/string spacing.

Sounds like a question for Bob T. himself. :-\

You can email him through the "Wood and Steel" mag Taylor puts out.  It may even be published!

here's some info i've been able to find from various reviews -
it's been stated the fretboard radius on steel 6 strings is 15"

GS Mini
1 1/16" nut width, 23.5" scale, 2 1/4" string spacing

DDX (now 214ce-BLK)
1 11/16" nut width, 25.5" scale, 2 3/16" string spacing
DDX neck is maple too ... hmm

514ce
1 3/4" nut width, 25.5" scale, 2 3/16" string spacing

GC8
1 3/4" nut width, 24 7/8" scale, 2 3/16" string spacing

i'm still looking to get a digital micrometer,
so i can check some first-hand though :)

Michael W.....that's interesting data.  It shows that the strings on the 1 3/4 models are slightly more "parallel" than on the 1 11/16 models, generally speaking.  The former seems like a good thing to me,  but I don't know if I'd feel it, if I sat down and did an "a/b" between the two.

i think  the bridges & the pin spacing are the same on the 100/200 series &
the 300-900 series (1 11/16" & 1 3/4" nut), but i would venture to say that
it could  be wider on the 1 7/8" nut (CPSM) & on the 12 strings as well -
the carve & taper of the neck & the width of fretboard extension varies
on the different necks & i don't believe that they would be interchangeable,
as the width of the NT neck pocket in the block would likely vary as well

depending on if one frequently uses their thumb to 'wrap-around' the E,
along with fingerstyle playing & fretting above the 7 fret or so, i can see
where there would a difference that could be felt, but it would be up to
one's personal preference to determine if a 1 11/16" or 1 3/4" is 'best' &
the way to do it would be to play 'em both & see - i got along with either ;)

A set of calipers is what you want. A mic won't do it,they're mainly for OD (outside diameter) measurements.

i plan on using the mic as a multi-tasker, to take other (much finer) measurements as well :)

Great. To measure string diameter you're gonna need a 0-1 inch mic, to measure width @ the nut you're gonna need a 1-2 inch mic, for nut widths over 2" you'll need a 2-3 inch mic, to measure soundhole diameter you'll need a set of inside diameter mics.
For quality measuring instruments, for (much finer) measurements,we're already at about a grand.
A set of good digital calipers will do it all for a "C" note.
