Howdy from the Washington, D.C. Area, USA
« on: February 03, 2012, 08:15:38 AM »
Glad to join you folks. Actually I am located in Bowie, MD just northeast of the city.

Been playing guitar since the early 70s. Was a strummer until about 10 years ago when I began to finger pick and right now working on learning more finger style.

Most of my playing is in church but I do enjoy getting together with friends for a session now and again.

Welcome, Cigarfan! I too started off as a strummer and have integrated finger picking as well and I really enjoy what it brings. Glad you're here  :)

Hi Cigarfan, I'm on the other side of the river near Alexandria.  Welcome to the forum, do you ever get up to Chuck Levin's in Wheaton?  That's where I got my Taylor last year.

Hey there TaylorPlayer516!  :D

Yes in deed I do frequent Chuck Levin's. It is where I bought my first guitar in the early 70's and also where I acquired my first 2 Talyors last December.

See: http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=239399

I really like those folks at WMC. Quite knowledgeable and willing to help. I have been researching a good amplifier and think I may be visiting Chuck again real soon.

Thanks for asking.

Ah, I see you have gotten acquainted with Bill in the acoustic room!!!

Wow, those are two beautiful guitars!!!!  I go to WMC but not often since it's about an hour away and with traffic one never knows.....

That GA-K is something else!!!  I love my 2010 Fall LTD Koa.

Yeah, Bill really, really, really likes me. 2 Taylors in one day. I think I made his sales week!  ;D

WMC is about 45 minutes for me too so trips are limited. But I think about the trip more often than I should.

I do like Koa. I'm sure your 516ce is really nice. Is it all Koa? Back/Sides and Top? Something about Koa is just so crisp sounding. I have a Koa Takamine as well that has such nice definition and crispness. Now that I can compare the differences in my Taylors and what I grown accustomed to in the Takamine, I think it's the Koa!

Good to meet ya!

My 516 is spruce top, koa back and sides.  I went there as a Taylor newbie - not really knowing what I was looking for and was playing a 516 with the cedar top.  Bill says - I'll be right back and came back with the koa.  My hubby was like - you have to get that!!

I love the koa and the sound it produces - I did actually notice it open up last summer and it sounds so good.  I got a Mini for Christmas and have suppressed my GAS for awhile but will be looking for a 12-string at some point.

I'm in the market for a uke and wish Taylor would hurry up already.  I may go with the Kamaka koa tenor uke as that is a beautiful sounding uke.

It's funny how you describe your experience with Bill.

I went to WMC (in Dec 2011) hoping to find a Spring 2011 Limited Edition GS Mahogany which was no longer available from Taylor and Sweetwater, Guitar Center, and Musician's Friend were all sold out. When I walked in Bill checked inventory and, to my chagrin, no GS-LTD in stock. So Bill says ... but you can try all 20 we have on the wall if you want! Wasn't long before the GA-K was talking to me. About an hour into my visit Bill decides to check the cases on the floor around the walls of the sound room and low and behold he cracks open the very GS-LTD I had come to see. It had been on a road show and had not been checked back into inventory on return. I was flabbergasted! But now a real dilemma. I had fallen in love with the GA-K and all of a sudden there is the GS-LTD I came to buy. What to do?

The rest, as they say, is history! Bought em' both.  ;D
