Title: Fresh from AGF
Post by: Strumming Fool on December 15, 2011, 08:37:39 PM
Hi all-

I've been a member of AGF for a long time, but if Taylor guitars will no longer have their own subforum there, I need a place to go! I currently own 4 Taylors, all GAs (my all-time favorite Taylor shape):

1997 Cujo14
2001 514e with engelmann top
2003 Pelican LTD
2011 BTO - sinker redwood/ovangkol

Happy Holidays to all!

Welcome Strummin' Fool, you came to the right place. A lot of familiar faces from that "other" place.
Cheers,
Terry

I just left Martin Music, my favorite dealer, where I was fortunate to meet
our very own Strumming Fool!!  We had a nice chat with Eric Martin, mostly
about Taylors, this forum, and what our next guitar is going to be.  ;D

Most of us have chatted with SF for years and I was pleased to attach a
face and personality to the name.  A genuine gentleman and all around
nice guy.  I'm glad you're here.

He'll be along soon, I'm betting, but to answer, YES!  We both talked about
how happy we are that you set this up, Josh.  Right thing, right time, right place,
right people.  Once again, well done, to you and the mods!!

Great place, great dealer.  There are some on the site that reside with me
these days.....this one you and I have talked about.  Terrific chatoyance on
that Sinker top; the top looks entirely different, depending on the angle
viewed from.

Welcome.  You have quite a collection of Taylors.  I love the pelican and cujo guitars.  Beatiful and original, classic Taylor.

very nice :)

also, i was wondering if you were able to compared the ovangkol you have
to any of the other sinker top GAs with the other back & side tonewoods &
if you were, what tonal differences & qualities made yours stand out to you -
i noticed that they have quite a few BTOs with sinker or adi tops in GA & GS
models, as well as some of the more 'exotic' woods that aren't on the BTO menu
such as this one

thanks for sharing the pic :D

it would be nice if Eric were to stop by & share his
thoughts on some of the guitars he has at his shop -
there aren't any sound clips that i can find & that
adirondack/ovangkol GS looks very interesting ;)

At Martin Music, I was able to hear sinker redwood on a number of GAs and GSs (both Taylor and R Taylor). Here's a quick review, and please keep in mind that it's all a matter of personal preference and the specific guitar played at the time:

1.Madagascar Rosewood: Fabulous, rich piano-like tone - beautiful balance. I played both R.Taylor and Taylor GS shapes. The R.Taylor was stunning, but the Taylor was less than inspiring.
2.Indian rosewood: a bit too dark, and somewhat muted (but I'm not a big rosewood fan to begin with). Two Taylor GAs, that both sounded sweet and resonant
3.Mahogany: mellow, but a bit too thin-sounding - a Taylor GA
4.Ovangkol: that perfect blend of bass, mids and highs - very complete tone! Two Taylors - one GS with an Adi top and a GA with a sinker top. While it was close, I preferred the sound of the sinker - wasn't as "dry" as the Adi, and had a bit more lushness to it.
All this "research" led to my choice of ovangkol as my personal best. Hope this helps!

That Adi-topped GS is very nice indeed. I just preferred a sinker/ovangkol GA that Eric had at the time, which led me to my BTO choices. However, I'm surprised that that guitar is still there. I wonder if most people don't even try that guitar because it's "lowly" ovangkol. It's one of the best GSs I've ever played, and I'm not a GS fan. By the way, thanks to Josh for giving us Taylor-lovers a new playground!
