Title: Monkey butt case?
Post by: mgap on March 12, 2012, 07:37:23 PM
So what does the term Monkey Butt Case mean when describing a Taylor case? ???

in 01, deluxe case production moved from el cajon to tecate -
the cases were made with 3 ply (poplar ???) rather than 5 ply,
the hardware (hinges) were changed  to a 'flatter' profile &
the handles went to a more of a C-shape (with rivets in the grip)

the black lining had a tendency to 'shed' when new, hence the term 'monkey butt' -
here's a pic of a 'hybrid case' - made in el cajon with the 'monkey butt' lining

the change was made back to a plush red lining in around the end of
05/early 06, which closer to the pre-monkey butt 'pink poodle' material

i got my first one 10 years ago & since their designation system & LTDs are (relatively) easy to keep track of,
& remembering some of the changes (Taylor time line helps a bunch too), i just 'jumped in with both feet' :)

right around the time i got my 01 314ce, i called customer service to register it & at the time W & S
was in fold-out newsprint form them & i asked if it might be possible to get copies of back issues ...
they collected every issue they could find, along with any catalogs they could find & sent them to me  :o
the priority mail shipping charge (which they comp'd) was close to a set of elixirs ... that much paper's heavy :D

i'm a mustang nut too, especially from 83 - 93, but i know a little about the 79-82 models & a little bit about
some of the SVO/SVT models ... going a little (ok, a lot) further back, tennis (wood to aluminum to graphite/
carbon fiber) & 35mm SLR photography - once my interest is piqued in something, them i'm in trouble :-[

y'all make this a enjoyable place to hang out & spend time in - it's fun ...
thanks :D

I have a bunch of the old ones as well, all the way back to 1997 or '98 I believe.   It's fun to read through them occasionally.  Especially the letter responses from Bob where he states that Taylor will never do certain things - things that are part of normal production now.  ;D

I agree that Michael's knowledge of Taylor Guitars is extremely impressive! 8)

So Michael, what's up with the new 300/400 cases? I must have missed something... :o

That makes sense.  TaylorStock 10 year anniversary is this coming August and, if I remember correctly, my custom 814c (and virtually all the other T-Stock Taylors) passed through *your* hands on their way to ours...

If memory serves, there were a total of 71 guitars ordered at Taylorstock.

I handled 54 of them...

the contour of the case, the grain pattern of the covering & the hardware is much closer in appearance, imho,
to the 500/series up cases - still black with chrome latches, but i believe the new covering will be more durable
(less susceptible to nicks) - i've seen 'em in the GS size (316 & 356ce models), which are really nice guitars too :D

I'd love to get a photocopy or scan of the article from 2000 regarding the Gallery Series, specifically the GSLJ.
I called Taylor CS but they said they no longer had any copies.  :(
