Title: Hello from SE Michigan!
Post by: John429 on December 14, 2011, 12:17:48 AM
I first learned to play guitar when I was 14 back in 1974 when John Denver was very popular and I wanted to learn how to play his songs. At that time, I had an old hand-me-down Harmony 6 string which I loved. As I got better at playing, I moved up to a Yamaha 6 string and then a 12 string, which I had for years and played for pleasure. It wasn't until 2007, when my daughter embarked on her singer/songwriter project and needed a high quality performance guitar, that we discovered Taylor. My daughter was/is a big fan of Michelle Branch, and loved the sound of the guitar she was using. We looked into it and found it was a Taylor 614ce (I believe Michelle currently plays Gibsons though). From there on, it was just comparing guitars at various guitar stores throughout Michigan. Although she also liked Martins, she fell in love with the bright sound of the Maple Taylor 600 series, which suits her well in live performance settings and goes nicely with her voice. All of this guitar research for my daughter reinvigorated my interest in guitars, so I have a 612ce. As an engineer, I am fascinated by the technical side of guitars - the body shapes, tone woods, saddles, etc. so technical discussions on these topics are very interesting to me. I enjoy learning from you folks here at the forum and am very much appreciative of Josh starting up this resource for us!

Good to have ya John429!

Dare I ask if you're a Wolverine fan?  They're my favorite college team, since I grew up in Ann Arbor as a little kid.

The very first Taylor that I fell in love with visually was a 610ce that I saw hanging up on a wall at a music store even though I never got the chance to play it. The stunning maple caught my eye.

Enjoy the forum!

Sincerely, Josh

Josh - indeed I am a Wolervine fan! My older daughter went through four years of voice training at the UM Music school and my younger daughter (a high school senior) is checking the mailbox daily hoping for her acceptance letter to the UM Business School.

John, welcome to the forum. I really enjoyed reading about the history with you and your daughter getting into Taylors. Wonderful! :D I love the mustang pic and remember when they were quite popular on the roads. I love the guitar pic too but have only seen a few posted with that leaf inlay. It's a stunning guitar! I assume the girl is your daughter...cute! :)  Good luck to your younger daughter with getting accepted to the college of her choice. Please let us know if she hears back from them. :)

Great car...do you take it to the Woodward Cruise? I am in Mustang Alley every year with my 2003 GT convertible....nice car but nothing like yours.

John,

Any chance your daughter's guitar was the one that had a Bad Sad, and needed the neck replaced, and Taylor came through?

nice ride :)

the last mustang i had was a 89 GT convertible & i have a 86 capri GS 5.0 EFI t-top
that's currently waiting for me to bring it about 2300 miles to the right of where it is now

i worked at some ford places in north texas & the charlotte area -
the car i had the most fun with was an 88 X-DPS couple i got in TX
other than 1.7 roller rockers, short belt & K&N cone), on the stock motor it ran
13.1 (bad trans case) at almost 102 & 8.4 (can't remember trap) in the 1/8 ...

fun times :D

Spieler - yes it was! I believe Cindy had asked about this also in another post. I'll never forget the 1:00 AM call from my daughter with her crying and telling me her guitar was trapped underneath a car in the coffe shop parking lot  :'(   Luickily, Taylor was able to completely repair it with a brand new neck and re-created the beautiful maple leaf fret marker inlays. Here are a couple before repair and after repair shots;

Michael - sounds like you wrung out some amazing performance out of that 88 coupe - holy cow! A friend of mine in college had a black 86 Capri GS. Funny - mixing our Mustang and guitar stuff - I was just thinking of the "GS" on your Capri as being a "Grand Symphony"  ;D

it was a fun car :)

when i was on the left coast, i was usually at 'test 'n tune',
back when it was still Sear Point International Raceway -
ran a 89LX hatch, 90 Ca Ed GT with first gen paxton SN93 (ball drive) SC, &
a 87GT (black) that the previous owner had completely gone through
ported intake, TB, heads (with triple valve springs), Hooker Super Comps

i didn't know anything about tires, gears & suspension back then, but the
nearly stock 3.08 gear LX (muffler delete, short belt) ran within 2 tenths
of the other guys that either had a huffer or were packing a bottle :)

i was going to mention the 614ceL30 - absolutely beautiful & most likely
the only one with a scarfjoint NT neck ... i'm glad that it all worked out :D

i think Ford/Merc was 20 years early - either that or
they knew that the GS was going to come out in 06 ;)

Ahh...I bet this is the guitar I remember from over on the other forum. At the time didn't you post about the accident and how Taylor fixed it? That was the first time I ever saw the leaf inlay...and it's just as stunning to see it again now on this new forum! :)

Cindy - yes, the same one. I think that might have been the first time I had actually posted over there although I had been a reader for a couple years previous. I thought the folks at the forum might be interested in what happened and also seeing how Taylor was able to bring it back good as new! We love the leaf inlay also. You know, in the gallery at the other forum, a fellow named Gutch has the exact same guitar, except a twelve string version. I guess that would be a 654ce L30.

Ah, okay. I remember that your daughter was young(er), and that the guitar in question was a 600 from the L30 series, so I took a guess.

A very great story, indeed. Thanks for the pictures!

I'm partial to the L30 inlays, having them on my own 512. While I prefer the more understated look of the mahogany appointments for myself, I think those of the 600 series are some of the most beautiful Taylor has ever produced.

Thanks! I specialize in really poor iPod/cell phone pictures (no, really), but will see if I can do my guitar(s) justice one of these days. :-)
