Nylon Action and Relief?
« on: July 24, 2016, 03:04:20 AM »
Hi everyone. I have one of the Taylor crossover nylons. It's a 2012 GAce-N-FLTD. I can find out tech stuff (specs) online for a "real" classical guitar, but nothing for these crossover GA sized nylons.

Can anyone suggest neck-relief and 12th fret action specs?

Thanks all,
Bob in South Florida

Wow! Now that's service! I can't thank you enough. I also have a T5 and GS, so you hit a home run, my friend.

Much appreciated.

Bob:

Just curious since I have the exact same guitar model and year...

Is there something wrong with how yours is currently set up?  Mine is amazingly playable and I would not want to change it, but I also realize that the neck could possibly shift with a change in the type of strings used or changing weather conditions or whatever.  So that is why I am asking.  Did you get the guitar new or used (mine is used but in mint condition)?

Thanks,

Tony

I bought it brand new from Guitar Rodeo when they were a Taylor dealer. And to answer your question, no, it feels great. Although I had to switch strings because the ones Taylor installed and recommend broke just from being in the case. But, I digress. I just want every guitar I own to be set up perfectly (I'm anal), with the lowest, best possible action without buzzing as I like to play finger style jazz (solo guitar). So, I got the Stew-Mac repair books, and along with other sources, I set the action as low as possible. My problem (one of many) is that I've never owned a nylon before, so have no idea what the action should actually feel like.

And again, my nylon is perfect as far as workmanship is concerned. Of course, the intonation sucks. But I think that's because I haven't spent enough time trying out different string brands, etc. It took me over an hour each time to install new strings when I changed sets, so I kinda shy away from nylon guitar string changes.

Thanks Bob.  I probably play very similar music on mine.  I don't seem to have a problem with intonation.  As for strings, mine came with D'Addario J44 extra hard tension strings.  I like these because they handle similar to steel strings while being easy on the fingers.  I will probably leave mine set up as it is.

Thanks,

Tony

I had to switch to D'Addario Pro Arte EJ44C because it seemed like every time I opened the case a string was broken - usually the D, A, or low E. I've had these new ones on now for about a year , and not one breakage. I have another pack to use up and then I'm trying a set with polished bass strings to reduce noise when playing solo - but I hear they don't last as long. I play my archtops with TI flatwounds because I just can't stand the noise with roundwounds. However, roundwounds on everything else.

As far as intonation is concerned, it's that darned G string. It's especially noticeable when I'm playing above the seventh fret. It's sharp, so I compromise and tune the G string a hair flat to "spread the wealth."

That is interesting about the string breakage.  I have not had that problem.  It may well be that previous owner addressed it somehow.  Also, I am not having the intonation problem either.  When I have noticed what seemed to be an intonation issue, it turns out that I was inadvertently pulling one or more strings, probably because I don't normally play nylon string guitars.  My guitar is absolutely mint, so it was apparently very well protected and possibly not played very much.  The brown Taylor case is not even scuffed anywhere, and it has all the original paperwork inside, including the original registration form (so I assume it was registered online, if at all).
