Title: Serious GAS
Post by: Guitar Cowboy on February 08, 2018, 09:07:03 AM
Last fall I attended my very first Taylor Road show at Tobias Music in Downers Grove,  Illinois. It is about an hour and a half from my house, but instantly became my favorite local Taylor dealer. I  played some awesome guitars as  I showed up about 2 hours before the show and they allowed me to  play when they were setting up,  One of the guitars that stuck in my mind the most was not part of the show but Tobias happened to have it in their show room. It was a 224 K dlx and I believe it was soon after they came out. With my recent Taylor purchases over the last 4 years, I wasn't in a position or frame of mind to be buying a guitar. Fast forward a few months and it just so happens that I came across another 224 K dlx that I absolutely loved. I only was able to play it for a short while, as someone else was interested, but playing it took me right back to where I was at the road show.

So, now I have some serious GAS. I am flush with Koa, but still find myself loving this one, maybe as a campfire or jamming guitar. Here are some pics. Check out the cool variegation on the headstock. My first thought was “why the heck didn't they use the back for the sound board”, but then I remembered that the back add sides are layered. I don’t think I could do much better than that top on a 200 series either.

Anyway, serious GAS going on here. Somebody talk me off the ledge.
Steve

Ok, I'll contribute to doing the dirty work and help you out.  ;)

If you really like everything about the guitar, are in a finacial position to buy it, and it fills a void for a player in your stable, I think it would be a beauty to bring home.

Jump!!!
...you asked advice from a forum of enablers, you realize that, right? ;)

I had recently discovered how good the 200 Deluxe guitars are.  Well worth the upcharge for what they do to these guits ...I have a 210Dlx that has no business being as good as it is.  Did I mention jump? :)

That is a beautiful guitar!

Does this fill a void with one of your existing guitars?  Maybe keep a one-in/one-out policy to please the better half?

Or put it on lay-a-way and make payments...it is better to ask forgiveness than permission.

Yes, we are enablers :)

I agree with you about one in, one out, since you already are "flush with Koa".  The thing is that this will not sound like the other Koa Taylors Right?  If it does not have the same tone as your other Koa's well you could justify not sending one out of your stable.

So, heres the deal you get the new 224 K DLX and ask for forgiveness when the dust settles.  Don't worry it will be ok.  Just do it like a old bandaid rip it.  Flowers will help  ;D

So about "who's gonna tell my wife?",

I took it as sort of you didn't want to but someone else might (like a humorous sit-com take), either possibility resulting in you getting stuck in the doghouse. Mgap took it more like "who's gonna break it to my wife?", again because you didn't want to, yet also might result in you getting stuck in the doghouse. But with 'my bad' flowers peace offering.

In either event, still sounds like you can't afford to pass this one up.

PS> Get her the flowers anyway. There is a quickly approaching Valentines Day by way of Hallmark and all that. Best of all, you can get the flowers to do double duty.  ;D

...Does this fill a void with one of your existing guitars? ...

Thanks all,  my wife found the email exchange I had with the store and the only question was whether I was planning a guitar addition to the house, so I took that as good news.
The part I have been struggling with the most  is the "void filling".  I don't anticipate the 224DLX to match the sound of the  K26 , and I anticipate the 224 to beat the GSmini, but are they going to be "significantly different."? ...  I don't know. However, I  know that I wouldn't  want to bring my K26 to the beach, or campfire,  or  a jam session with too many people on the stage and I don't know that the GSmini would project enough for some of those circumstances (anyone buying that?). So,  from a functional standpoint,  maybe there is a void. The one-in/ one-out idea is good but just isn't working for me at the moment... I like the flowers idea better.

I will bring my K26 to the store to play them side by side at the next op. Unfortunately,  with weather and distance someone may snatch this out from under me  unless I can put a deposit down and be able to get most of it back if I need to.

Anyway thanks and I'll keep you posted.

Steve

Makes total sense to me!  ;D

I am sure Tobias will take it back if you aren’t satisfied. I used to live near there and they had a great reputation then at least.
Of course, like everyone else, I say “do it”!
I once played a 214ce dlx in a guitar store near my hotel. It was so good! Sounded better than most of the high end Taylor’s and Martin’s in the room. I almost went back to the hotel to get and sell my Koa mini and come home with that as I couldn’t travel with 2 guitars. Some of these 200 dlx’s are amazing, and this one, soon to be yours, looks great too!
Let us know how it plays and sounds please.
My wife says- have it arrive on Valentine’s Day and thank her for the gift!
But there is also the marriage tax, “you must get your spouse one of the same or spend an equal or greater amount on said spouse”
Good luck!

A wise friend asked me, "what's the worst that can happen?"  So you spend a week in the dog house but you have a new guitar!
