What is this stringed instrument?
« on: February 02, 2017, 11:12:17 AM »
While watching a video of Baroque music, I couldn't help but wonder what is the large stringed instrument (I'm not referring to the cello)? I tried to show as much of the peg head as I could.

That is a lute with what appear to be 14 strings.

Thought it might be an Oud, but not with two separate courses of tuning pegs, plus an Oud is played with some form of stick.   BTW Jordi Savall plays a Viola da gamba, a cousin of the cello.

If this is a lute, I don't think I've ever seen one like this previously!

More like some type of harp.

Try Theorbe or Chittarone,  both forms of renaissance lutes with two sets of tuning pegs,

It definitely some type of lute, though there are variations in lute design over the years (and in different countries). Check this page for more info on lutes: http://www.atlasofpluckedinstruments.com/lutes.htm

It is some sort of oud. If you are prepared to accept "oud" as a generic word. As the oud and its local variant is found in various formats from Spain, Portugal and North Africa to the Middle and Near East and even in European and Asian Turkey, and every country that was ever part of the Ottoman Empire,  its correct name is probably different everywhere. Its kinda like having a guitar with three necks.
