NGD - 914 "Straight Up"
« on: December 30, 2016, 06:56:34 PM »
First, I would like to thank my husband for this awesome guitar. He wanted me to have this, ever since he heard me play a 914ce at a music store. He told me that if I didn't order what I wanted, he would do it himself. With a threat like that, I just had to order one (of course, I fell in love with it too).  ;)

I would also like to thank Ted and Helene at L.A. Guitar Sales. They were a pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended!

I decided to go "straight up" (no cutaway and no electronics). I have those bases covered already and thought the beautiful appointments on this guitar needed the symmetry of a non-cutaway.

This 914 is everything I expected it to be. A beautiful, rich tone, with a powerful low end. It has a voice unlike my others, so it is a nice complement to the group.  It plays everything well, from the slower, more articulate songs to the bluegrass songs that I play with a small group. I am almost exclusively a fingerpicker and it does its job very well. The arm bevel is oh so comfortable too.

I'm sure you already know all about this redesigned 900 series. So, now some pictures. Trying to take pictures of these Taylors is difficult, because of the shine and reflection. So, I did my best.

Such a beauty Susie.  I think that could be a guitar for all times.  I think the new design is a lot nicer than in years past.  Now the addition of the armrest turns this model into something I could consider.  But hey, I don't need another guitar.
So, congratulations to you, I hope you will be very happy with it.

Wow, she's a looker! Love all the detail - very classy instrument, especially sans cutaway and ES ! Congrats Susie - sounds as if you're getting a similar vibe as I have with my 2015 cedar/rosewood BTO. Enjoy and happy new year!

No. This is my first 900 series Taylor (and last  ;)).

Thanks for the reminder, Craig, but I have already added it to the 2016 NGD thread, just under the wire.

TaylorGirl,

I didn't realize until I saw your pictures here that you are also over at AGF.  Here is my response from there (with the appropriate "handle" change):

Congratulatons on your NGD, TaylorGirl! I owned at one time, a 1997 Taylor 912, and never bonded with it. Just a couple of months ago (September) I got a new 914ce (as you mentioned playing one in a music store). The difference, to me, was night and day. I really believe that Andy Powers' reworking of the product line did wonders. Your new Taylor is definitely a keeper. As some say here, play it in good health.

Tony

Yes, I'm a under a different name there (uh oh, now my cover is blown  :o).

Thanks. I agree with your observation on the Andy Powers rework of the 900's. I was simply blown away by this. My husband and I played bass/guitar last night and he just couldn't get over how good this guitar sounds. Glad to hear you're enjoying your new 914ce much more than the previous 912.

Personally, I don't like responding to threats.  But faced with the alternatives, I supposed I could succumb to such an assault as this.
...you ROCK!  Which also goes without saying, your husband likewise rocks!!!

Congrats on a great guitar, and may you two continue to enjoy the music together in health and wellness!
:D :D :D
