Has anybody used a ToneRite device?  Is this the real deal or is it snake oil?

I haven't used one but have seen lots of discussions about it and how it can "wake up" the sound board.  I'd rather wake mine up by playing the life out (or should I say in?) to it.  The one I have now is getting so opened up that I practically need mic'd vocal just to sing with it.  It's becoming SO LOUD! But to your initial question, there are people who have used them a believe they work.  You could search the AGF for threads with its regard.

You are going to get 50% of the responses that say they work and 50% of the responses that say they don't.

LOL.  That's probably a spot on estimate!

And half of those are correct.  The other half, not so much...........
I happen to put it in the "snake oil" category myself, although the concept makes a certain amount of sense.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.

Sounds a bit like BS to me. Playing your guitar in involves about 10 to 15 years of 4 hour gigs in smoky venues 4 or 5 nights a week. Spilling a little bit of beer on it at the motel after the gig is helpful.

Here's what I was wondering: If you get it "played in" and "opened up" in short amount of time (say--one year) does that mean that in 20 years, when a guitar would "normally" be played in and sounding prime, will that the guitar will be past its prime?

In other words, will someone in the future pick up a used/vintage guitar and say, "Nope--this one's past it's prime. It was broken in prematurely and now all the tone's gone."

Many people swear by the thing but I'd rather just play it and go from there.  I buy my guitars because I like the sound then...I'm not looking to make them "better" right away.  They already ARE "better."

IMHO.

I have one -

It works if you think it does.
If you don't think it works, then it doesn't.

Hope that helps -
