NGD: GS Mini Koa FLTD
« on: December 09, 2014, 04:09:28 PM »
I knew this would be an interesting guitar. Owning an original spruce top GS-M and jonesing for a Koa guitar for a long while, though never finding one that I liked, I've been looking to try one of these since they were announced. My dealer had a few on order for months and finally got one in, he emailed me when this first one finally came in. Knowing that the GS-M's are usually surprisingly lively, I thought that a Koa top would take the usually mellow Koa sound and give it a little kick. I am loving this guitar so far, the Koa sound which I usually find as "quiet" is very "live". I'm also finding more lower end and a nice ringing sustain.

Here are the obligatory photos, not that I'm not proud to show this guitar off, It looks as great as it sounds.

Posing with Kula Lodge coffee mug (Hawaiian theme)  :D

This is the same shot but with the flash, it seems to accentuate the grain.

Welcome to the mini-e koa club, nice specimen there! I think we have a few "regulars" here who are patiently waiting to pick one up in 2015 too.  8)

Thanks to all for the good wishes on this one. I'm loving this little guitar! I A/B'd it against my original Spruce top, the Koa is much warmer although the spruce feels more played in (I guess that's a part of the mysterious "opening up" that is much talked about, but hard to describe). To justify having 2 Minis I think I will leave the spruce version in an alternate tuning. I did that with my Baby-M when the first Mini arrived- Nashville tuning.

On a silly note, I never name my guitars but I think this one will be named "Groot". I see his face in the wood on the back.

Congrats!

The best thing about my FLTD Koa mini is Taylor included an on-board pickup system.  To amp my original GS mini I had to plug in Taylor's after-market humming bugger that sat right below the strings in the sound hole.  It was only a $500 guitar, but still...

Anyway, I haven't played it enough for the wood to "open up," but it sounds fine now.  I think I bought it so I could own a Koa.  I do not believe I will ever buy a full-size Koa guitar, unless this one "opens up" to me and convinces me otherwise. OKAY, I CAME BACK TO POST THIS COMMENT: I played my koa GS mini today for a couple of hours and it totally blew me away. It's sounding better than my 712 ce GS 12 fret!!

By the way, have you seen how much people are trying to get for the FLTD Koa mini on eBay?  I guess it's a lesson in supply and demand.
