A left handed hello from Texas!
« on: October 02, 2014, 05:39:27 AM »
Hi everyone! Fifteen years ago I went to Southpaw Guitars here in Houston determined to buy a lefty Martin or Gibson acoustic guitar. After trying out about seven or eight I was disappointed by the tone and the high action of most of them. The salesman said he had a couple of Taylors I could try. I looked at him and said "What's a Taylor?". I admit I had never heard of them. He handed me a 414ce and it blew me away! The tone was incredible and the action was perfect. That was also when I learned the word "ovangkol". Since then I've added a 324, a 356 12 string and a GS mini. I've been reading this forum for quite some time and decided it was time to join and add my two cents worth.  :)

Greetings from another Texan. 25 years ago I named my first son Taylor. Then 10 years later I discovered Taylor guitars. Took me until 2014 to actually own one!!!! Was at a music festival in New Mexico in September and heard a great sounding acoustic, I just had to sneak around the bandstand after the performance to get a look. Of course.....Taylor! That renewed my search and a few weeks later I bought my first, a 315CE. The left coast has some weird things going on but they can sure make some great instruments!!

Welcome Byrdsman!

I found my first Taylor in 1997 - and discovered that cedar/walnut could be a great acoustic guitar wood combination.  Since then, I've acquired a few (see signature below) including an ovangkol-backed BTO. It's also a great tone wood.  Looking forward to your input.
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

Hi Byrdsman. Welcome to the UTGF. I'm left-handed, but play right. Same with golf. Playing guitar is like playing golf to me. Probably why I gave up golf. :) Glad you found us. Enjoy.

I wish I was ambidextrous like you! I also play golf left handed and there have been many times I've thought about giving it up. I just tell people that I play army golf. Left, right, left, right.  :)

Yup, always been a big fan of the Byrds and Paul Simon. In fact it was Simon that made me want to play the guitar in the first place. I love all of those old S&G songs.

But you were so much older then, you're younger than that now.
