My first parlor - Martin Custom Shop 0-28VS
« on: June 02, 2012, 05:28:12 PM »
I am just astounded this choice little morsel has joined my collection. It is purely guitar karma at work.

I have been hankering for a parlor. I had toyed with the idea of a BTO GC with Adi over Ziricote but when Ted of L.A. Guitars checked, Taylor had no Ziricote in stock. My small guitar would have to wait.

Then, a couple weeks ago over on AGF, one of the members posted a picture of his six Martin guitars. Quite a group. On the end was this gorgeous little parlor. I posted a comment that I would love to own it if he ever decided to part with it thinking he would probably tell me I'd have to to pull it from his cold dead fingers or something. To my pleasant surprise shortly thereafter he was in touch and we struck a deal. 11 days later here I am holding this wonderful little Martin guitar.

The guitar sounds fantastic. Rings loud and clear even with a light touch and can take a decent strum too! Love the overtones and the dog gone thing smells great! It is amazingly comfortable to play. The nut is a little wider than my other guitars which takes a little getting used to but this little guy is definitely a keeper.

This is my first experience with Carpathian Spruce and Amazon Rosewood. It is an awesome combo! And you folks know me ... I like to diversify when it comes to tonewood. When I setup the recording equipment again I'll get a sound clip posted.

What a beauty, I can't believe I missed your thread, so glad you posted over in mine.  I do love this little guitar.  It's so loud and rings so clearly it sounds beautiful.  Do you have yours tuned in standard or up the minor 3rd?

Standard tuning right now.

I know DADGAD and that's about it in alternate tunings. Not familiar with up a minor third.

Standard tuning right now.

I know DADGAD and that's about it in alternate tunings. Not familiar with up a minor third.

The luthier who built mine called it a "terz" guitar designed to be tuned up a minor third from standard.  E,A,D,G,B,e becomes  G,C,F,A#,D,g (I think I transposed it right - up three 1/2 steps or one could capo standard guitar at 3rd fret)

Apparently this compensates for the lower string tension based on the shorter scale.  Hence, when I tune down to standard I get a bit of buzz or dead notes which we think the heavier strings would fix.  Currently, there are extra lights on it so he gave me some lights and meduims to try out.

Right now have it tuned to standard.  I went to see his acoustic trio play yesterday and he pulled out the little guitar and began playing with the higher tuning it really sounded sweet next to the regular acoustic and the bass guitars.  He also has one tuned in Nashville tuning (the upper octave of a 12-string first four strings) which sounded fantastic!

I am going to restring with the heavier strings to see how it goes but I may just leave it a experiment with it in the higer tuning as it sounds great.  However, I guess I'll have to learn chords in that position at some point.

Glad you are having fun with yours, I just love mine.  When we walked in the store and I saw it my husband went "uh-oh" and the rest is history.

Thanks for the info. I will give "up a minor third" a shot.

I have lights (.012s) on mine right now and it sounds and feels wonderful. I often use a capo to reach a key that compliments my voice (my range is definitely bass). Up a minor third may make it easier for me to capo lower and still get to my range.

We'll see. Thanks again.
